What do we think of CSP . . .

I don't know a whole lot about in game adjustments so I rely on the experts. Last night PJ Carlesimo liked the zone defense. Then a bit later he said "Cyclones still in zone, huh." Like he was surprised they didn't switch out of it. About 30 seconds later they switched to man. If Prohm is making the same adjustment PJ Carlesimo would I would say that's a good sign.

Considering almost none of these guys are truly his guys, he's done a great job fitting his style and system with the players.

He cares, a lot. I could see him staying here for a long time if given the opportunity.

He had to learn how to coach and work with Power 5 talent last year - and still made a Sweet 16 (he has as many as Fred had). He has room to improve, definitely, but this team is clearly getting better and better as the season moves on.

We should double his salary and give him a contract for life. Until they lose as then we should fire him and shun his family for 200 years.

He follows arguably the most popular coach ISU ever had. He never loses the team. He turns Fred's guys into great defensive players. He takes us to the Sweet 16 a year ago, and this years team has done really well without a significant post presence (until the last few games). He's always even keel.

I really like what he's done in his short time here and think he can develop into quite a coach for ISU if we continue to be patient with him.

I've been disappointed at times both years and it could be said there have been times we've underachieved. That said, he's done a good job and I'm going to stop any criticism and enjoy the ride through the end of this year. He and these seniors deserve nothing but praise for turning this season around.

They are doing a good job, buying in from what i have seen the past 3-4 games. Let's roll.

Only thing though, why do so many coaches wear pleated slacks? Have they not watched anchorman?:D

If I had to sum up my feelings on Prohm in one word it would be..... hopeful.

He's had plenty of shaky coaching moments which we've all commented on, but things seem to be changing for the better and Prohm seems to be getting his footing now.

The way things have been trending lately, I'm hopeful that Prohm is they right guy for this job. He has the team finally buying in and he finally has a starting lineup that seems to work well.

And going forward, I really like what he's done on the recruiting front too. Wigginton and Lewis are studs. McNeil has a lot of promise too. I think Lard will be a major contributor next year too. We'll see how the rest of the class pans out, but I'm fairly confident he'll land some good pieces.

ISU has roughly maintained the same scoring efficiency per possession as we had under Hoiberg, but we've improved both of Prohm's seasons and moved up 50 spots in the rankings for defensive efficiency from Fred's last team. I think if you want to see consistent NCAA tournament berths and deep runs, that's something you want to see.

I think the book is still out on long term recruiting for Prohm, but I like what he's bringing in so far.

This team has lost some close games, so those tend to cause a lot of "what ifs" from fans. But if you look at this team and where they are at in the Big 12 despite a complete lack of any size, you know they are getting some good coaching.

After the OU game, it sounded like he's been listening to his assistants too much and decided to start Young on his own merit.

Side note--funny thing the other night was Jeff Capel coming up and talking to Coach K at Virginia, and it looked like Coach K purposely ignored him.

I thought the subbing seemed more in place/rhythmic at KSU, with exception to DJ getting caught in those turnovers late. However IIRC DJ's been reliable with the ball in prior situations, and while it may have been a couple of possessions too late, Morris was back in to close things out.

Most of the season though, yeah, the line ups haven't seemed to be matched up all that great vs. situations.

The offense has been very stagnant but Prohm keeps talking about how ball movement (side to side) is a key asset while certain players keep trying to play the one on one game so who knows how much they've really bought in.

I am all on board with him. Does he make some curious decisions at times, yea but what coach doesn't? I just want people stop comparing him to Hoiberg and form an opinion solely on what's going on now and move on.

I REALLY hope our fanbase doesn't transform into NC State-type expectations. They fired Gottfried after going to the NCAA tournament 4 of 6 years and he had 2 Sweet 16s. They had been to 5 NCAA tournaments in the past 20 years before him.

Scary thing is that we've all seen a lot of Prohm-hate. Even though the guy will take us to the NCAA tournament again this year and has one of the best recruiting classes in ISU history coming in...

He deserved to be fired. He was a great recruiter but underwhelming coach.

I'm bought in with him. Landing Wigginton and Lewis is all I needed to see. If he's got good players he can win. The fact he's got this roster playing like this on the road is impressive IMO

I'm struggling to see the perspective of those that are still uncertain on Prohm. He's installing his method of playing the game this season with guys that weren't recruited for this system and he's winning (when's the last time we beat both OK and KS teams at their place in the same season?). If expectations we simply that we were going to enter this season and easily roll to another NCAA bid, then expectations were off. When was the time we had an incoming class like the one we have coming in next season? Never? And it's not done yet. The last thing I'll mention is the fact that we're starting to play the best basketball at the right time in the season. It was a tough transition to go from Georges, Nadar, and McKay to a very small line-up. We're damn near a lock for a 6th straight NCAA appearance and doing so by keeping our head above water in a tough, tough league (not a single game is a gimmie). That doesn't just happen and it certainly doesn't happen with mediocre coaching.

Expectations with Naz and Monte back should have been a top 25 team. While sweeping the Oklahoma and Kansas schools on the road is really good it also comes along with already losing three games at home.

When he came in some said he would be good at transitioning us from Fred he hasn't done a horrible job but it has been less than smooth. Others said he knew how to coach since he was already a head coach. Again he hasn't been the worst but he definitely is still learning.

If we finish the season only losing at West Virginia and winning a couple games in the KC and the NCAA then that will go a long way. He has to dig himself out of a bit of a hole he dug mid season.

Also some of this is a result of underachieving last year. While the NCAA tournament results were good they really were not that impressive. A poor finish in the regular season, one and done in KC, and only beating double digit seeds in the NCAA are nothing to be thrilled about. Some point to the lack of depth which was true but some of that was self induced with McKay issues (while I wouldn't have normally tolerated that type of stuff you have to adjust to personnel). The thing is unless you are Duke or Kentucky and even then every team has flaws. We were a top 15 team and really didn't perform like one.

All in all I am hopeful that he can be successful here. I feel much better than I did mid season where I thought he was showing an inability to improve. I still have my doubts though.

Since we won last night, my thoughts on CSP are positive. However, my thoughts will change to negative upon our next loss. Am I doing this right?

This is what I was going to subtly throw out there. It's funny when a guy routinely gets bashed because of L's earlier in the season...W's change that. I've always liked the hire and get tired of guys bashing him for reasons that may be out of his control. Most knew that the post was going to be the big question mark this year from strike outs in recruiting. It's quite obvious who worshiped Hoiberg, and who's giving Prohm a chance.

I'll reiterate what some have said. The guy cares about his players, look at his reactions after they beat KU. He repeated I'm just happy for the guys 3-4 times. He's a young players coach that has their best interest. He's held steady in recruiting and doesn't even have his players in here yet. He has stated before he wants the team to progress towards the bigger picture for March. I think that is happening. Yes, there are in game situations to question, but every coach has those moments. Just be thankful we don't have a guy like Bruce Weber.

I find the season much more enjoyable to reserve judgement until the end of the year. There are ups and downs for nearly every college team throughout the season and part of the coach's job is to get the team past the downs. I think Prohm has excelled at that so far. I don't get all of the turn the season around talk. We've always been in the top half of the best league and on the right side of the bubble. Brad Underwood has turned his team around, Prohm has stopped us from ever veering too far off course.

With all of that said, I don't think he's been a home run hire yet, but has shown great potential. If we make it to the Sweet 16 this year, I'd be fine with JP to start considering an extension or bump in pay.
