I'm not a huge fan of our zone, but in spots like that, against a team that is indecisive, it can work. If KSU had a Matt Thomas or Naz Long on their roster, we would have been burned for a corner 3 every time.

Agreed.

If he pulled that out against KU, with Mason and Mikaksjasl23490usca0sa' around...

I would have thrown stuff at the television.

But he didn't. :)

I suspect there is not a fan in the country who at some point during the season was not disappointed how their coach performed especially after a loss.

For me I tend to wait til all the evidence is in.

This is so true. You go to any fan base's message boards after a loss, there's fans ripping the head coach, and wanting him fired. The best are Kentucky and Kansas fans. I understand they may have higher expectations as fans, but that's just dumb. This season is far from over, but when it is, that's when I'll step back and look at it objectively.

If you judge a team, or coach, on a game to game basis, you're gunna be in for a hell of a roller coaster. So many things make or break a game, number one being a teams ability to make shots.

Hey, thanks for all the serious responses. I've learned basketball stuff from them.

Guess this thread amounts to just a late-season snapshot, no doubt there will be more similar discussion post-season, I'll be sure to read that, too.

One thing that I think the doubters really need to keep remembering is that all season we've been playing without ANY front court to speak of. That is HUGE. In basketball, you have back court and front court players and we are missing half of that equation. The fact that we've done as well as we have is perhaps amazing.

I'm REALLY excited about what the late season emergence of Solomon could mean for us. Just look at our two game sample size of having just one front court player. Giddy.

Upon his hire, I was more skeptical about his ability to bring better defense to ISU- especially considering what he did at Murray State. The fact that ISU has improved defensively the past 2 years is impressive because 1) it is with most of Hoiberg's players and 2) we haven't had a great post defender.

It is important to point out he is still growing, learning, and becoming for comfortable as a young head coach in one of the best conferences. As others have noted, I think Prohm has masterfully balanced being a players coach while still "running a tight ship". I also like that he has a process-oriented long view of a season. He seems to embrace the big picture rather than compromising for short-term success.

In-game management, player substitutions/lineups, and out-of- bounds or late game plays are the only aspects I would like to see improvement. I think the jury is still out on the ability to recruit and/or develop post players too.

Improved defense, on-court demeanor, high-level recruiting, general care for his players, and ability to adapt to players' strengths has me sold....for the moment.

Happy as a Hawkeye at an all you can eat pickled eggs and old Milwaukee light tailgate.

Team improvement as a season goes on is a very high priority and CSP is certainly meeting that expectation. A favorite CSP strategy of mine is that he wants to give the starters a break during the first and second halves. And, if we have a lead, he tries to stretch that out. Yes, it has backfired a couple of times, but in several games (especially the KU overtime game), our players have looked fresher/stronger than the opposition. And yes, our depth this year is much better...no issues with letting DJ, Babb, Holden, and Bowie give the starters a break. Being able to do that as the game schedule compresses in tournament time is gold. I don't want a 39+ minute/game Monte Morris...32-34 minutes like last night is perfect.

Is he Fred...nope...but that is okay.

What do I think about Coach Steve Prohm? The same thing I thought the day he was hired. He's a great coach and in time he will prove that. Prohm had a five year 104-29 at Murray State record including four-time regular season champion and one-time tourney champion. His current overall record W-L% is .741. Not too shabby for a guy who took over the hardest job in the Big 12 post-Hoiberg.

"Most people don't know Steve Prohm. What they don't know is Steve Prohm is the best defensive coach in America" - Cincinnati Bearcats Mick Cronin

In two years I predict Steve Prohm will be knocking on KU's door for the Big 12 Champion

Here nor there
At a high level? He's done a very good job. He's the most balanced and open-minded coach we've had. He connects well with the guys. He's a player's coach while still running the show and being demanding.

He's still new enough in the Big 12 level and to this recruiting area that I think he'll improve, too. And having a good staff is critical, and I'm optimistic we can grow there also.

I think he's better than a lot of people give him credit for. People seem to view coaches in a vacuum and not look at the individual challenges. He's dealt with a lot in his first two years, and overall, handled things well.

My opinion of Prohm hasn't changed much. I think he's a good coach that took a huge step up in competition. Overall he's held his own. I think he needs to and will get better. Is he perfect? Nope, but he's pretty damn good and this isn't an exact science. I'm not completely sold, but I also thought Hurley and Gottfried were both going to be excellent hires and they're on the hot seat so what the hell do I know.

Along the same lines there have been times where Monte has spent extended time getting rest and the team has done well with the Jackson and Babb combo. The half court offense isn't as good but they rank up the ball pressure on D and get some transition buckets. His guard substitutions and lineup combos have been very good aside from Jacksons lack of mins vs TCU in the second half. Then again, tough to kill a guy for rolling with Morris, Naz and Matt. Front court sub patters have been odd with extreme swings in minutes. Most of us wanted Young to get more minutes, but only a week ago at UT he really struggled, so it hasn't been the obvious most think it was.

I think he's at his best when he's doing what he wants, and he's alluded to it with his sole decision to start Young.

If Saturday and Monday are wins or near wins and the team is looking like they have the last two games I'll believe the guys have officially bought in.

Another thing to consider when looking at preseason expectations and records- the conference has been a massive surprise as a whole this year. I was expecting 12-6 in the league this year, but I also thought it would be a 4 or 5 bid league.

I think we under-appreciate how well-conditioned our players are, especially the "Big Four" in Morris, Mitrou-Long, Thomas, and Burton, though especially the first three.

The fact they can play 35+ minutes per night without losing much effectiveness or efficiency is borderline miraculous. That is a testament to our S&C program over the past four years and their own initiative and drive to be in the shape to be able to do that.

I don't think we constantly need to bring this subject up. I am really glad he is here and hope he sticks for awhile. People are going to judge the coach. A new thread after every game though gets a bit redundant.

Does anyone know how to re-sync this up with Shaq's Shoot Pass Slam from NBA Superstars 3? Thought it would help add a couple more cars to the hype train.
