Thoughts? Personally it doesn't bother me but a lot of students seem to be up in arms.

"AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University will cut down two trees, Black Walnut and Hackberry, that are almost 200-years-old to make way for a new student residence hall.
“Our enrollment has grown significantly in the last five or six years,” said Cathy Brown with Iowa State University-Campus Planning. “We had to make a difficult decision in this case to consider the current needs of our students and long-term needs for housing.”

Better than knocking down people's houses for a parking lot. I see no big deal about it considering the need for more space.

What about that poor dirt? It's been there thousands of years longer than those trees! The horror!!

BTW, are they nice wood? I'm wanting to build a new bookcase.

To be honest, I hadn't even noticed these trees until the recent reports. Are there other trees like them on campus that are being kept for research and conservation purposes?

I'm sure they looked at all options and this was the best. Not ideal but whatever. Hope someone chains themselves to tree. That would be funny. Overall Ames needs to grow up as in more 7 story plus buildings

I would think the black walnut would be very good stuff. If they're smart the compromise here will be that they find a good, permanent use for the wood inside the new dorms such as as a way to "pay tribute" to the trees.

They will sell the trunk, chip the rest and plant new trees.

Absolutely disgusting that they are cutting these trees down. Their historical significance is far more important to the ISU campus than adding more dorms.

If I was back at ISU I would have chained myself naked to one of these trees and dare someone to come take care of my wood.
