Two 200 year old trees to be removed from ISU campus for new dorms

Absolutely disgusting that they are cutting these trees down. Their historical significance is far more important to the ISU campus than adding more dorms.
I'd guess 98% of people at ISU didn't even know they existed prior to this article.

Hackberry actually make for pretty good lumber. It just isn't as popular as walnut. Trees that old should make some fantastic slabs.
That said, it is always a bit disappointing when old growth trees like that are taken down for progress.

I would think the black walnut would be very good stuff. If they're smart the compromise here will be that they find a good, permanent use for the wood inside the new dorms such as as a way to "pay tribute" to the trees.

I am assuming that is the "rest of the story".

Instead of adding more dorms you should be more selective on admissions and send the dumb kids to UofI
