My son's TV just went out, and I need to get him a new one naturally. His space is limited so have to stick with a 55" as the width of the space where the TV needs to go is rigth at 51 inches.

I was looking at the following:

Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

I don’t know TVs anymore. Pictures all look great.

But with all the apps… I feel like “processor speed” is important. I want to punt my budget model Samsung into the street because navigating apps is so glitchy.

I guess additional info one might ask is: what is the tv used for? Mostly tv shows? Sports? Video games (if so, is it a current gen console where it may benefit from certain tv features). Budget also is a question.

https://www.rtings.com/ is a good resource for reviews on any tv.

I've had good experiences with samsungs and sonys, but have tended towards the mid-upper end of their lineups.

Plus, wide viewing area? Directly in front viewing? Bright room or dark room?
All those things plus what you mentioned determine the best TV.
Rtings is a great resource and will list out their recommendations per viewing method and budget.

I’ve used both Vizio and Samsung. Hardware wise, they are both fine. The Samsungs have become annoying where they always have their menus pop up even though I use an external box.

But I agree with previous posters. I have a hard time telling a difference between a cheap TV and an expensive one in most situations. The input signals seem to be a bigger impact than the capability of the TV. So unless you have a media room that you watch in complete darkness, get the $250 Black Friday special IMO.

Last time we bought at Best Buy the sales guy was very down on Samsung. He showed us all of the open box returns and they were almost all Samsung.

We went with a Sony and it's been nice

The Hisense.....not so much. Really feel like we got what we paid for on that one.

Due to recent events I cannot recommend LG. Been at in-laws last two days and it’s constantly freezes when running native apps like YouTube Tv, or casting. It’s 2 years old. Per Reddit it’s common. Software is updated, etc. no cure.

As others have stated, find some models you're interested in, then check Rtings to find which best fits your needs. I generally stick to LG or Sony, but the higher end Hisense models have been really good the past few years.

I personally would not put any weight into the smart capabilities of any of them. Streaming sticks (Roku, fire stick, Chromecast, etc) are so cheap these days and the experience is head and shoulders above the native smart apps.

I will say, they're getting better if the tv has a processor that can handle it. A newer, higher-range sony with the Google TV OS on it functions pretty well.

But a more budget tv is going to have too little processing power and likely too little storage as well so it'll be laggy and better to run a roku or the new google tv streaming box.

Thanks everyone...I appreciate the feedback. TV's have been changing so much these past few years I just can't keep up. Go Clones!

At the end of the day, it all comes down to rabbit ears, plus tin foil wrap.
Seriously.... virtually all mainstream flat screen manufacturers produce a solid product. Finding differences?
Serious/silly nitpicking.

I'd always been a samsung guy, as they were the best when flat panels first came about. Any more they are all pretty good. Bought a Vizio for the basement about a gear ago and love that TV. The Samsung in the living room is also great although the remote sometimes doesn't work and have to pop a battery out to reset it.

Would say most importantly make sure the TV has the inputs and enough of them for what you need.

Yeah, I have an LG and am disappointed in the apps and the ones not offered.

Does it still come down to refresh rate? That's what I always paid attention to. I've been getting Vizio for several years now and had few issues, and it's nice having all TVs with the same remote in case one gets lost I can just borrow from a different room.

I would think the cure would be a Roku or similar device. I've never had great luck using TV apps.

There is a noticeable picture quality difference between the high and mid range tvs on display at Costco. It makes me wonder if they intentionally lower the brightness on the cheaper models to push you to the more expensive ones.
