With tax time coming up, I wanted to share this:

If you are a State Farm customer, you can complete and e-file your Fed. and State taxes for FREE!

All you have to do is register on the State Farm site, and after that is completed and you log in, there will be a link for free tax filing.

I was going to make a trip to Costco to buy TurboTax today...I'm glad I saw this first!

Is this for the online version or just the CD version?

Have used TurboTax before, for 3-4 years I think.

With my father-in-law working for H&R block, we can now get ours done free, so I can't justify using TurboTax.

Very handy software though.

That is a great deal, can't argue that.

I am a File Taxes Online - Do Taxes FREE - File Taxes With TaxACT fan. Local (Cedar Rapids) company. The programmers used to make the Parsons Tax Edge before Intuit (TurboTax) bought Parsons. Their federal is free in online form.

Turbo tax may be free may be free to SF customers, but the devteam for TaxAct are class acts.

I've used TaxAct for years and like it just fine. It's really nice when it just imports last years return, fills in the blanks and you have a good template to start with right off the bat. Pretty much have mine done already - just waiting for the statements to roll in to d/c the numbers.

As for cost (free or not) - don't you just deduct your tax prep costs anyway????

They have done this for a few years now. I of course didnt notice until last year. I think they provide free McAffee antivirus as well.

I've used H&R BLock once in my life and got audited that year. When they say they will go to your audit and "stand behind" you what they really mean is they will be about 150 feet behind you. Of coarse the seasonal employee who does your taxes wil be long gone. My H&R representative met with me 5 minutes before the audit, took one look at my taxes and said "Well, I could have told you that this return was goin got be flagged."
Then we got in the audit and she said "We used all the numbers that he gave us so its his fault." The rest of the audit she sat back and watched me try to defend myself.
The H & R stands for Hold & Rape. I've used turbo Taxs for 3 years and been very happy.

Well for those who dont care or know the difference, free AV through state farm is a good deal to them. I use SAV corp so I dont apply.

This right here explains why the tax code needs to be totally scrapped and started over. Why should a smart person need to hire someone to do their taxes? It should be, look at my total income, take a calculator out. Multiply it by .25 and then send that check to the government. It is just way too complex, with too many loopholes, and silly deductions. We should drop all deductions and tax rates, and just flat tax everyone, no deductions, no loopholes, no cheating, and then the tax code would be 100% equal, since everyone is paying the same percentage.

Not familiar with that one. I gave AVG a shot and I didn't like how it slowed down my machine - I felt it was as bad or worse than Norton. Nod32 has been very nice so far.

You're not the first person I've heard this from. The nice thing is, my father-in-law doubles as an accountant and is well-versed in tax law, he's been doing his own taxes for years and actually does his homework each year.

But if I did not have a connection to H&R Block - I doubt we'd be going there.
