I thank Herman for the work he has done here because I agree he did a pretty good job with what he had to work with.

I think you have to honestly expect that we will lose younger coordinators to bigger jobs. If we aren't then there is probably something wrong or the coordinators have settled on the program.

Herman 100% the QB coach at OSU,

Urban will not be the OC. They are looking at LSU's Studwara and Clemson's Morris

Didn't Clemson just match OSU's offer?

Edit: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...no-14-tigers/2011/12/04/gIQAoQkOUO_story.html

The school announced Sunday night that Morris has agreed to a new deal that will keep the first-year coordinator with the Tigers. Terms of the contract were not released, but the school said athletic director Terry Don Phillips would release them at a later date.

This would be the part that makes sense to me, if true. But then I don't know why Urban Meyer would want him, either.

I'm more puzzled than anything. If Rhoads wanted to be rid of him, why did Meyer want him. If Rhoads wanted him to stay, why would he take a demotion and give up the chance to actually run an offense next year?

Maybe he himself realized he needed a little more baking? That would make sense, but I seriously doubt it.

One of the more unusual coaching moves I can remember (unless he was on the hot seat - I didn't realize it was even room temperature!)

it is rather confusing as to how this came about. One thing i am seeing is the amount of cash that top schools are throwing at assistants. They can make $1,200,000 as a top OC. Maybe this gives him the chance to learn from Meyer and whoever the OSU OC will be. Plus Ohio State with Meyer has a chance to be really really good in the next few years...I can believe this may be a mutual ending.

I was always blown away by listening to Herman in interviews, and then mildly disappointed in a lot of what I saw on the field. I definitely was never calling for him to be replaced, but if Rhoads is in this thing for the long haul at ISU, I'm excited to see who he might bring in and there's no reason to think we couldn't get an upgrade.

Other posters have a great point that being OC at ISU now is radically different than when Chiz and Rhoads were first hired. Any OC who knows Rhoads and watches film of our defense could get excited about coming in.

Not a big loss from a play calling standpoint, but could be a big blow for next season as the team will be working with a new offensive coordinator. How long will it take to know the new guys system? I think Herman has been a great at getting the quarterbacks prepared for games, but his play calling has been questionable and predictable.

Totally agree. If he was going to be OC at Ohio State, it wouldn't raise any questions. Heck, if he was brought in to be OC at a dozen other "bigger programs" it would be an upward move.

But QB coach? That's a job you take after losing your OC job, after failing to make a bowl or something. Not when you are at the helm of a bowl team's offense with freshmen at center and QB!

Somethings crackers here. Again, it isn't like I think losing Herman is the worst thing that has ever happened to the program - he was clearly better than his predecessors but not exactly coordinator of the year, either.

I can't imagine willingly giving up a Big 12 BCS offense to coach the qb position in, of all places, the Big 10.

I don't care how great an internship with Urban Meyer might be. It just seems like a bizarre career move - one of those that can leave him out of the game-running business for years.

I can't believe that's what he wants. But maybe the risk of that is less than I perceive.

I hope this is the first of many OC's that move on to greener pastures. If we play winning football, this is going to be the norm. OC's move around, even the big schools rarely do they stay at one place for a long time.

So who will call the plays at the bowl game, Bliel?

Better idea: give Systems a one month contract as QB coach and OC.

This. CPR has gotten some national publicity, the program is showing some serious signs of life, ISU is in the best conference in America, ISU has stockpiled some good young talent, etc...

This opening could be a very sought after position for offensive coordinators that are young and promising and want to move up in the college football ranks.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

I don't see how Herman's seat was warm. I thought he did an incredible job with the talent he had. This was the best offense that ISU has had in the past 7-8 years by far.

No, it isn't the best offesne of the past 7-8 years:
2011: 23.6 ppg (86th), 392.8 ypg (55th)
2008: 25.3 ppg (55th), 386.8 ypg (44th)

In all likelyhood whoever OSU hires as an OC would probably not be there more than 5 years as they would be looking on for a HC job. Then Herman might be able to step in and take over a great OC job if he is doing a good job.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

Statistics disagree. I'm not going to beat up on TH (I'd be glad if he were still here) but PR will find an acceptable replacement.

Ok, so I decided to check the statistics that you claimed would disagree with me. Here's the offensive statistics for the past 5 years or so:

2011:
Total yards-4714
Avg yards per game- 393
Total points scored- 282
Points per game- 23.5
Fumbles Lost- 17
Interceptions- 15

2010:
Total yards- 3809
Avg yards per game- 317
Total points scored- 260
Points per game- 21.7
Fumbles Lost- 7
Interceptions- 10

2009:
Total yards- 4741
Avg yards per game- 364.7
Total points scored- 267
Points per game- 20.5
Fumbles- 11
Interceptions- 17

2008:
Total yards- 4642
Avg yards per game- 386.8
Total points scored- 304
Points per game- 25.3
Fumbles- 11
Interceptions- 11

2007:
Total yards-3923
Avg yards per game- 326.9
Total points scored- 218
Points per game- 18.2
Fumbles- 11
Interceptions- 14

2006:
Total yards-3814
Avg yards per game- 317.8
Total points scored- 226
Points per game- 18.8
Fumbles- 8
Interceptions- 12

The offense has been going in the right direction and this year they had the most total yards and yards per game. If it weren't for the several fumbles or interceptions in the red zone this year, the scoring would be increased as well. For starting two new qb's, one freshman and one transfer, Herman did an incredible job, IMO.

Such as? I didn't see/hear anything like that.

I seem to remember a sideline report from Ben Bruns during the Tech game maybe? Anyway he said that Rhoads could be heard screaming "Run the damn ball" at Herman. Take it for what its worth.

pretty mindboggling if he's their OC as this tweet says...totally changes my outlook of this

That's what I was wondering earlier too... if true then I agree. Changes everything and I would be the first to offer my congratulations.
