I think our best chance is with a guy like Bob Stitt. ISU is an upgrade from Montana and I can see him wanting the challenge of playing in the Big12. He is known as an offensive innovator and would have something to sell. If JP gives him the cash to hire some every good assistants, then they can help recruit Big12 level athletes.

The only other choices are to go after young guys from lower level FBS programs. I don't think P5 coordinators will be willing to come to ISU. It's just too hard to win here.

I'd be pleased with Stitt, but it's one of those things where he'd have to be impressive in the interview. He'd about have to have names of guys he planes to contact for assistant coaching spots. Since he hasn't been in major college football before, he'd have to have an excellent staff both from a coaching and recruiting standpoint.

Justin Fuente's Memphis football team is playing tomorrow (Thursday evening) in a game with Cincinnati. Fuente (and a good chunk of his staff) are from Oklahoma and Texas. Fuente was a QB at Oklahoma in the mid 90's, finishing his career at Murray State). Prior to accepting the Memphis job in 2011, he was the OC at TCU (working on Gary Patterson's staff). He took a Memphis team that was nearly winnless and last year played (and beat) BYU in a bowl in Florida. Chance to watch his offensive style tomorrow.

Finally, the requisite Murray State connection.....

The chances of getting Stitt are slim, he's still in his first year at Montana.

My list

No particular order:

Doug Meacham
Phillip Montgomery
Scott Frost
Frank Wilson
Doc Holliday
PJ Fleck
Justin Fuente
Jake Spavital
Rhett Lashlee
Wille Fritz
Lance Leipold
Bob Stitt

...Jim Tressel
...Mack Brown

Leipold and Stitt would be tough gets since they are in the first year at new schools. Meacham is a home town guy at TCU, born in Arlington, TX, add to that his success at TCU and I think he will be on the list of some bigger schools. Great list by the way.

If I was going off just your list I would have to say:

Phillip Montgomery (will be on better teams lists)
PJ Fleck (will be on better teams lists also)
Doc Holliday
Willie Fritz
Frank Wilson

That would be my top 5 anyway. Leipold would be in my top two if I thought we had a good chance to get him.

PJ Fleck (will be on better teams lists also)

I like the turn around Fleck had in his 2nd year at Western Michigan. They went 1-11 in his first year, 8-4 in the 2nd (8-5 after losing to Air Force in the bowl.) Currently sitting at 1-2, losing to Michigan State and Ga Southern (same Ga Southern that WVU shut out.)

Don't get me wrong I enjoy beating Iowa, but it's in Iowa States best interest to stop scheduling teams like Iowa, Toledo, NIU, UNI, NDSU.

Just schedule 3 EASY wins like many other schools do(well some can schedule 4 even). Get some easy early wins, boost confidence, make this team look like a winner to attract recruits.

You just listed a mediocre P5 team, two non-P5 teams and two FCS team. You can't really get too much easier than that without becoming a complete joke.

although Rhoads absolutely must go, I don't expect us to make a good hire. Not even the best among the candidates who show interest. We are going to hire an Iowan, or if someone from out of state, the first guy who comes in and says "I'm all about the bible, then family, then football"

now Iowans and guys who say that can turn out to be good coaches......but when that's influencing your selections.....

I really don't think Stitt is the way to go. I realize that coaches from around the nation have met with him to pick his brain and analyze his offense. My main problem is we would be handing over the keys to a guy that ran a D2 school for about 15 years. I'd like to see what he does at Montana for a few years before taking a serious look at him.

The academic requirements to get into the CU schoool of mines is very high if I'm not mistaken. What I'm saying is that many athletes are there for the education and sports come secondary. I don't know how hard he had to recruit to that school, when its probably selling itself to those who want to go there. I may be wrong..... Granted he's had a lot of winning seasons at CU and a couple really standout years.....but I'm very suspect of his background, and who he's competed with and against to do it.

The Iowa Western coach looks good on the surface too(offensive mind/great pipeline for P5 programs), but much like UNI, the transfer situation kind of "makes the decision for the athlete" to go to UNI for his final year or two. Or go to IWCC because his options are limited, and those programs have been getting good exposure recently.

I like everything I read about Justin Fuente.
Lots of Big 12/Texas ties. Took over a crappy Memphis outfit and his trajectory has been good.
Offensive minded coach, and competes for recruits in a state/area where he gets left overs from Tenn, and possibly even Vanderbilt as well. I think he knows how to do more with less at Memphis. obviously an easier conference to navigate, but no red flags that I see.

and I see Stitt is now 1-2 after the big season opening win, but they have played some good teams in the FCS. Not an indictment against him, but he JUST LOST TO TURNER ******* GILL BY 10 POINTS LAST WEEKEND!!!!!!!!

Uh......so take it for what it's worth.

There are plenty of easy wins out there. Just look at Baylor's schedule every year. Pick any of the smaller conferences. Try to schedule with the bottom half of those teams. I'm not condoning this, just saying it's a pretty quick and easy process.

Maybe it's a separate thread but who in the P5 will be HC shopping at the end of this season?

I assume Illinois? Maybe they'll stick with the guy they promoted...
