Johnny Orr is still awesome.

He was just on with Kieth and Hassel and still gives some of the best interviews.

He is obviously pretty excited with Hoiberg being named the head coach along with Grayer being retained.

DAMN! I was listening since two, except for a couple things that took me away from the radio and missed Johnny!

Great interview with Johnny. I guess in a pinch he could help be an asst. coach. Key point he said was that it is managing personalities and letting the players mesh and do their job vs. running a bunch of plays.

I hope JO was summarily chastised for 'bashing' GM!

:jimlad:

There is not serious talk of him being involved in the coaching like Lavin mentioned with Gene Keady at SJU...is there?

Johnny is quite simply the best. They need to name the court after him NOW. It was a great interview and you can tell he sees this hire as the continuation of his legacy.

Maybe we could replace the ENORMOUS Pioneer logos with JO's face!

After Johnny hung up Keith mentioned the time a year ago when Johnny sat down in-studio at KXNO and told stories for an hour or two. I dont know if any of you heard that, but it was great!
Today's interview was good, but that story telling session a year ago was just awesome.

I'm sitting in my office listening to Johnny and looking at the autographed photo of him hanging on the wall. I'm sitting here pumping my fists and laughing the whole time. I'm ready to buy some season tickets. I can't wait!

Is that available anywhere? I'd love to hear it.

Keith and Andy don't podcast but you can hear a replay of this at 6:10. (no, this is not me trying to get you to listen to Matt and Miller today) just thought I'd let you know.

Great question. I actually thought about emailing Keith and seeing if it can be podcasted. (Even though its a year old already).
It was seriously awesome though. Some of the stories Johnny was telling I hadnt heard before.

I don't understand why this has not been done. He is a larger than life personality and will live in the hearts of Cyclone fans for many years to come.

Johnny mentioned that Jim Hallahan would be a good fit for an assistant. Heck, he even said he would come and help coach! Classic.

While it might seem nice to have a legend out there helping out... and I'm sure Fred will want to consult him for his wisdom, I would see it being rather dangerous to actually have Johnny out on the floor with him

Too much nostalgia and it'd make it hard for Fred to leave his own mark on the program... a big name being trumped by an even bigger name, people thinking that everything happening is all Johnny's doing, etc.

I'm fine with there being a mentoring role there but I don't think it would be in anyone's long term interest for Fred to appear to be a shadow puppet of the second coming of Johnny

I had the pleasure of interviewing Johnny on the phone about three years ago. One of the most genuinely nice people I'd ever had the pleasure to work with.

Every year that goes by it becomes more shameful that we haven't. And, one step closer to not being able to have him there when it is done.
I think having Fred there may help things along, though.
