He must have developed as a coach at New Mexico, cause the coach I saw at Iowa wouldn't have won that many games at NM. Alot of coaching too is the players you can get, you would think he now has the chance to get any player he wants. So he should do pretty well there.

Alford must be an amazing interview. All I have ever heard from people who have had any kind of personal interaction with the man is that he is a giant D-Bag.

Or he has a great agent. You have to admit that he has some really good things on his resume. There aren't many coaches who won an NCAA national title as a star player. But that clearly hasn't translated into success as a coach, especially in the NCAA tournament. I want his agent negotiating for me!

I think New Mexico was probably a good spot for him. Good support for the team, but not excessive scrutiny. Now, we just wait for the inevitable meltdown. And I don't see him ever being a head coach again after the meltdown. If he couldn't handle the scrutiny in Iowa City, how does he think he can handle it in LA?

I don't know if there is more scrutiny at UCLA, there will be more national media attention but as far as day to day scrutiny I think IC is worse. In IC, he was the big celebrity and gossip about him spread very quickly. In LA, UCLA basketball is always going to be behind the Lakers and usually USC football, and that's just on the sports scene. People won't be worked up over running into Steve Alford like they would in IC.

I suspect that Alford may have gotten this job because of old-time UCLA BB fans who haven't really been paying that much attention recently, but think that UCLA should "hire a champion" because "we are UCLA." And they will be the ones who scrutinize him and soon see him for what he is ... a punk who peaked as a student-athlete.

Yep. In LA Alford will get hit up more for spare change than he will handshakes from overbearing fans.
In LA, the people will only care about him if he is having historical success or failure, assuming they even care about college sports and know who Alford is. In small college towns like Ames or Iowa City, almost everyone knows and/or cares. About everything. Not good for a guy like Alford.

I don't see how decisions get made by people who haven't been "paying attention". I don't know why they made the decision they did, but I'm sure there was some thought about each season and vetting going on.

You don't go to the NIT that many times if you're not a good coach.

After the way Alford handled the scandal I couldn't care any less about him. As long as neither he nor his corpulent wife are on my TV.

ISU has a far far superior coach than UCLA. That's all I care about

I'm shocked, but seeing this makes me think if a class Basketball program like UCLA is willing to hire him, it is seeming more and more that he had less control over the Pierce thing that we even thought. I have to believe that UCLA wouldn't have hired him unless they were convinced that he didn't create that*cess*pool over in eastern Iowa. Seems like a lot of evidence that it was the sleasy administration over there all along.
