Solid state or traditional hard drive?

Just curious...saw there was a combo deal on these:

I think the trend is going towards SS, they process faster, but do not have as moch storage ability right now.

I use one on my netbook (had one laying around from another project) because I dont need much space but appreciate the extra bit of read on it. Otherwise, until price per byte comes down I just cant justify it on any of my other machines.

Almost every review I read was ******** about the price, so I would say probably not.

Theyre not back to what they used to be, but theyre coming back down.

This. I did a build a few months ago and used a SSD because of the floods in Thailand sending HD prices through the roof. Love the SSD.

I went with the Western Digital Caviar Black for my backup drive and I really like it. Quiet and pretty fast. Thinking about getting one for the wife's computer now.

I went with the Western Digital Caviar Black for my backup drive and I really like it. Quiet and pretty fast. Thinking about getting one for the wife's computer now.

Why would you get a caviar black for a backup drive? Seems like way too much overkill.

Probably, but I do a lot of backups that contain a lot of video and photograph editing so I thought I'd go the conservative route. They were way cheaper a year ago also. Mine is a 2TB that I got for $139.

I've had an 160gb intel SSD in my home built pc for 2 years now and couldn't be happier with it. I just put my os, a few programs, and my browser on it and it's only about half full. I had a 1tb hd laying around that I use for back-ups and e erything else. The SSD makes this pc fly and in all my years of building pc's, no upgrade has made a bigger difference. Quick boot, fast opening programs, and silent. I'll never buy/build without one.

I haven't heard very good things about the hybrid drives. I would get a minimum 160gb SSD just to be safe.

I do the same thing. I bought two caviar black 1tb drives which I mirror for data redundancy. The SSD has my operating system and my programs on it, but I also use it for anything I'm currently working on. System works well and it always startles me a bit when I copy something over to the caviars and here them start to spin up. SSD is the signle biggest performance enhancement you can give your computer.

My laptop came with a 1 tb combo (8 gb ssd)... Not sure it's that much faster. Would love to trade it out for a smaller SSD just for the speed.
