This team heavily relies on shooting, which isn’t always going to work. We get in these scoring droughts, and we let our opponents get on huge runs.

In the Arizona game, we scored two points in a time span of six minutes and eleven seconds.
In the Iowa game, we didn’t score a point in a time span of four minutes and forty-seven seconds.
In the Baylor game, we didn’t score a point in two minutes and fifty-seven seconds.
In the KSU game, we scored two points in the last five minutes.
In the KU game, we didn’t score a point in a time span of five minutes and fifteen seconds.
In the TCU game, we scored four points in a time span of eight minutes and thirty-four seconds.

All of our losses can be traced back to scoring droughts. We just need to move the ball around so we can get better shot opportunities.

A a little unrelated (or maybe not) but seems like we went dry for a long stretch in our last NCAA Tourney game vs Purdue as well.

If you guys dont want scoring droughts then I suggest that we Recruit Better Players ...than what our opponents have on their teams...aka TCU and KSU would be a good start ......

Wait you have to score to win at Basketball, good to know. Yes most of the time when teams lose they don't shoot well. Some nights you shoot 70% some you shoot 40%. You just hope you shoot for a little better than average most nights.

I put this game on the ISU defense. It was similar in feel to vs. Texas or @Oklahoma, but the difference being we couldn't get the stops vs. TCU.

PNR and transition defense was spotty. Also, credit to TCU who seemed to answer each time ISU went on any run. It just seemed be one of those days where the ball bounced TCU's way, and for whatever reason it was not ISUs day.

I’d say defensive effort lost all those games except for Zona and K-State

There wasn’t anything abnormal about our offense yesterday other than Shayok air-balled two to start the game and Halliburton didn’t shoot enough. They sold out and let Jacobsen get his and our freshman starters didn’t step up.

Our defense was the problem teams are flowing us to one side, getting Shayok stuck in a corner and dribble driving against that flow and THT, Wigg, and Halliburton can’t keep up laterally.

Yeah, 100% on the defense (with a note that the offense often put the defense on the chopping block with bad turnovers). Most of TCU's answers came via a bad turnover that led to a run out. Had to be at least five or six times where we had an opportunity to cut into the lead (especially when we had it down in the 9-12 point range) where we turned it over instead of scoring, which led to an easy bucket for them on the other end.

Droughts happen...one thing this team gets caught up in is looking like they need a basket NOW instead of running it through a bit and getting something at least high percentage.

Defense on the perimeter the last three games has been pretty meh.

Agree about perimeter defense being lackluster.

ISUs problem is not completely because of poor interior/post defense (which was the thesis of the latest Hines Column). This ISU team doesn’t have “defensive” erasers, but Jacobson and Lard have been pretty solid when they play near the rim. They have had difficulties in the 1-5 PNR when they are forced away from the basket. Similarly, our perimeter defenders are too easily allowing opposing drives to the rim.

THT and Wigginton seemed to have the most difficulties in defending the perimeter yesterday- miscommunication, poor positioning, and ball watching while in defensive help position. This is not a team where you can funnel an opposing driver to an elite post defender- which puts a lot responsiblity and burden on our perimeter defenders to be near perfect.

It's one thing to go on long droughts because you're not getting good shots...but this team IS moving the ball around...they ARE getting good looks. They just aren't making them. Even layups. If we intend to make a long run in the NCAA tournament, we HAVE to make a large portion of our open 3s. We can dribble penetrate...the Cyclones are very good at that. But when it gets tossed back out for an open 3...got to start consistently making more of them.

I tend to agree with the OP. If a team can avoid scoring droughts, the opposition has to shoot lights out to go on a sustained run. Yesterday TCU went on a 27-4 run in Hilton- that is crazy.

I think this team panics a bit when the opposing team gets hot offensively. We tend to rely on 3 point shots to stop an opponents momentum. I would like to see us make a concerted effort to get paint points when opponents get on a roll. Making an opponent work hard on defense by pounding the paint, can in-turn impact their offensive momentum.

I felt yesterday during TCU's run we had players pass up good 2 point shots to get a teammate on OK 3 point shot. I look at it this way. Some times a player is having a bad offensive night, they make a couple free throws and get hot. Same goes for missing 3 points shots, sometimes make a few 2's and the 3's start falling.
