Rumor: Ferentz Talking To Michigan

From listening to people talk around here... it seems to me that Michigan thought they could get Miles at a discount. They thought since he played and coached here, and has said he is a 'Michigan Man' he would come no matter what. Didn't turn out that way.

Reminds me of a similar situation, offensive lineman for the Steelers - Faneca.

Local guy, been there a while now. Is a free agent at the end of the year. The Steelers not doing anything for him on a contract right now, priority is Big Ben (can't completely blame them).

But the fans think the guy should take some sort of discount in pay because he's local. He's been a big reason for the Steelers success (aka running game) over the years and the fans want him to take a discount in pay just because he's local. Some think the front office is thinking that way too.

If that's the case, they'll lose him just like Michigan "lost" Miles.

Well I will say that KF supposedly hid in the background at the MBB game this past weekend so he didn't have to say in front of cameras that he was staying. That's just the way the Detroit Free Press contact put it. Supposedly he wanted to see the recruits at the game but didn't want to have to go on camera so he left before the game started instead of sitting in his seats.

Ugh oh! Just reported on the radio here that the contract Miles agreed to at LSU was supposed to be signed this week and now has been delayed until after the BCS Championship game.

This isn't over yet!

Anybody surprised? Just because he said something about staying - it really means nothing. He was doing little more than putting his team at ease.

However, I can't believe that Michigan will wait until mid-January to name a coach.

I hate to lose Faneca -hate it! But we simply can't pay $7 Mil per year for a guard who will be on his last contract, plain and simple. It's ridiculous some of the pay days some other Free Agent guards got last year, and he deserves way more than the stiffs that got paid. They simply can't pay him that much and still have supporting guys around him, plain and simple. We have a good up and coming guard (Chris Kemoeatu) that we're grooming for the position that will no doubt be a let-down, but the line has played horrible all year anyway.

We can pay Chris $1 Mil for the next 3 years and draft another 4-5 guys and pay them next year with this $7 Mil. That's how the Steelers operate and it's worked pretty well for about 15 years. I hate it, but it works. As the salaries get more and more out of control and losing teams get stuck with killer Top draft pick salaries, the poor keep getting poorer.

I can't believe how the Colts have managed to stay successful paying basically 5 guys 1/2 their team salary, but it's worked pretty well the past few years for them. On the opposite end the Pats and Steelers plug in new guys or crusty hungry Vets to fill the roles rather than rewarding their draft picks with big contracts.

On Ferentz. I strongly believe he really isn't interested in anything else, but his agent is. Every off-season he remains "silent" while his agent floats his name everywhere but Timbuktu. He gets a litter richer as does Ferentz. His name isn't what it was, no matter what Jon Miller or any talking head says -it's just a knee-jerk reaction to throw his name against the wall to see if it sticks.

I don't think they will. I just think that this leaves the door open for Michigan to approach him. Mr. Miles, if you have every intention of staying at LSU why are you waiting to sign this contract?

How many of you have told your employer that you were looking for another job?
My experience has been that I don't tell them until after I've accepted the new offer.

I can't imagine anybody going to their boss and asking for the day off because they have an interview scheduled.

I actually told my manager yesterday that I applied for another job - but it was within the company so it's much different:) I guess KF isn't applying to be the soccer coach.

OK, that's an exception. I had to tell my boss that once. I figured I better tell him before he got the call from HR.

Agree with ya 100%. I don't think the man is doing anything wrong really. He just appears to be looking for another job and not saying a word about it.

I do think the Iowa folks that think he's just out recruiting, not commenting about the rumors because he's stubborn and is 100% set on "returning" to Iowa are completely crazy.

The thing that bugs me - and would really bug me if I were an Iowa fan (yuck) - is that he has let it go on this long without saying anything. I completely understand not responding to every rumor but there's a point and a line that gets crossed where you have to if you ever want the fans to respect you.

It's been over two weeks now where KF hasn't even been seen in public, even though he's been sneaking in and out of the various Iowa offices dodging cameras and reporters. That's not something somebody does if they have nothing to hide. I can only assume that he doesn't want to go in front of a camera because he doesn't want to have to say he's not interested in leaving. If he wasn't interested, he'd be out doing his normal stuff.

Exactly right - and has been stated, his recruiting class would seem to be suffering because of it.

Well I can imagine a few other reasons he may be avoiding the cameras. He's still got 3 players wrapped up in a rape investigation. It might not be just the coaching thing. I still find it curious that he hasn't come out and done a Les Miles tirade just yet.

Give me one reason for a coach not to say "I'm staying at XXX"...if that is what he plans to do.

And spare me the "KF doesn't do that" spiel.

IMO, there is only one reason a coach keeps quiet when being seriously rumored for other jobs - he's fishing for a deal - either with that school or another.

Maybe KF in fact does not want to go to Michigan. However, there are a number of other jobs that are open and may come open before this thing is over. Him being mentioned along side the Michigan job is a nifty marketing item.

The guy may very well stay at Iowa, but his silence on the issue is saying a lot right now.

What do you think it is saying?

Frankly, all I think it is saying is that "I like having my name out there as a potential candidate for other jobs". It's a form of free positive publicity that could possibly be used to leverage better money or a longer contract.

The problem with Ferentz is that once you lift the hood (to keep all of the car analogies going) on him...you find a pretty average coaching record with his only real strong selling point being the few nice seasons he had earlier in this decade. On the negative side of the ledger you see bad losses and some real off the field "issues".

The good news for ISU is that if Ferentz is later named coach at Michigan, the later in the game it is announced, the harder it will be for Iowa to find a replacement, setting the team back for next year. This should help us with in state recruiting and building our fan base.

That's exactly what I think he's saying...I guess I thought that was implied enough in my post.

It seems clear to me he's looking for the bigger, better deal.

Right now, I liken his current situation to Steve Alford, the lite version.

To me Iowa looks to be in a world of hurt. Even if he stays the fan base can't be happy with how this looks. And as much as KF is paid I seriously doubt if he is looking for a "bigger" contract. This tells me he isn't perfectly happy at Iowa and Iowa is not perfectly happy for him. Best case scenario is this drags on for a while and he leaves in January after all other good coaches are hired. Worst case, he stays, there is discontent by the Iowa fans, legal troubles likely continue, and we beat them next fall...so either way looks good to me.
