What I like about Austin, admittedly, is the fact that he's a former Cyclone. I think this REALLY helps him as a recruiter. He can effectively communicate to these kids what it's like being an ISU football player, living in Ames, etc. When kids hear him talk about ISU, they'll know he knows exactly what it's like to be in their shoes. People who are close to this school can understand what takes to get things done around here. Atif was part of the big turnaround at the turn of the century, so he's seen it first hand. He's a guy, that maybe not at this position, but at least in the near future, needs to be part of the ISU coaching staff.

Their DB coach played at BSU, so I doubt he's willing to leave, even for a raise. My choices would be:

1.Wally's old DB coach at USF (don't know the name)
2.David Blackwell (may have to move some coaches around as he usually coaches LBs)
3.Bobby Elliott
4.The DB coach at TCU
5.Atif Austin, I wonder if he can make the transition back to the defensive side. I'd LOVE to get him if Pope ever left.

Accoridng to Rivals, Wallys DB coach at USF (in 2008) was Troy Douglas. He is currently the defensive line coach at UNC. There was no DB coach listed for 2009. Troy was the Recruiting coordinator at Indiana in 2005 before heading to USF, so he might be qualified. He's from Florida so he might have some pretty good connections down there.
Maybe he will come to ISU to work for Wally again. Not sure.

Again, Blackwell would be a great guy to have on staff. He is a great recruiter. I don't think anyone on the defensive staff has specifically coached DBs before though. Maybe Wally has enough experience that he would feel comfortable with that task.

Just noticed that Troy Douglas is listed was the main recruiter for Tim Jackson (who ISU really wanted and went to UNC) this year as well as a couple of good DBs for UNC. He was also recruiting Bernard Reedy who ISU was interested in. Seems like he was UNCs go to guy for Florida recruits.

You sir are freakin nuts. I thought you wanted the team to get better? I am not saying someday he wouldn't be a nice coach, but this has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever read on here.

No kidding, what was he thinking?

Honestly, I don't know what I was doing there. That was stupid.

Wally has had a pretty long coaching career.. I'm sure he has connections to a lot of possible candidates for this job even if they weren't recent.

Seems like Bobby Elliot has been in and out of ISU football for a very long time. Also seems to me that the last time he left, because he thought he deserved the D-coordinator job and didn't get it. so I'm not sure he'd be willing to leave the warm beaches of SD for the snowbanks of Iowa.
After the usual end of season firings, there will be several well-qualified coaches looking for work. I'd think being on Coach Rhoads staff would be fairly attractive.
As has been mentioned, given Wally's years in coaching, I'm sure he knows several names that are not familiar to us. While it's a set back, I'm pretty sure CPR will come up with a suitable replacement. Darn shame about Ash leaving, though.

Don't know that he isn't still living out in San Diego, but he is currently unemployed and has been since Chuck Long was fired a season ago. So being employed might be enough reason to live in the snow banks of Iowa that he is familiar with.

If he got paid for the 2009 season (as Jeff Koonz and other coaches on ISU's last staff did this last fiscal year) I can't see how he'd get paid into FY10. If he did, Elliot's got a good agent and San Diego State's AD is dumb as a rock.

Elliott is working for the SDSU athletic department this year, but is out of coaching. he's listed as part of their development staff.
