Can you clarify this? I'm not sure I understand what you're saying re: HS or AAU. For the most part, AAU and HS seasons do not conflict.
I agree, they rarely, if ever, conflict with one another. The point I am trying to make is a controversial one in High School athletics today, and that is High School sports and AAU sports.
Some high schools create their own "off-season" teams and play with each other, while their coaches are closely involved and work on these players. These players that remain with their high school teams, I believe, not only become more talented, but also better teammates during the high school season. An example is Harrison Barnes. According to a few of his Ames High teammates, he played basketball for Ames during the offseason, and if they had a weekend tournament off, he would play for his AAU team, as would other Ames players.
In my belief, AAU for ALL sports doesn't do much for a player, except for possibly getting them more exposure, depending on what tournaments they join. I believe AAU focuses more on the "me" aspect of the game, where it doesn't really matter how good a player may be, they are just there to get colleges to look at them. I know of a club sport that actually has their athletes pay $15,000 a year to play on the team, which travels to around 8 states, from Florida, to California, to South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, and I believe New York.. If you play on that team for 4 years, is it worth paying $60,000 to have a kid maybe get a scholarship? And say your kid is great...top 150 player in the nation. If they play AAU, will that really be what makes Duke, North Carolina, and Kansas grab their attention? No, it's the attention they've brought to themselves in those skills workouts.
Very, VERY long story short (Which I'm sure most didn't read

If you play for a high school team year round (during the offseason workout with what your HS coach says you need improvement on, or your skills coach,) I personally believe you are going to become more talented and get just as much exposure as if you would if you paid to play AAU ball. I just don't think AAU is literally worth it.
And now, to be completely honest, I have no idea how this subject was brought up, or why I commented on AAU in the first place. I'm just not a big fan of the thought and I don't think it does anything for played except waste their parents money.
