Realistic Thoughts on 3-3....

Hello Fellow Fanatics,

If someone at this beginning of the season said we were going to be a 3-3 ball club after the first 6 games, honestly, I would have said that is probably about right. Best case I would have hoped for 4-2. At this point my only real disappointment is how we have responded to top flight competition in the games vs Iowa and Utah. Granted these coaching staffs have been intact for a long period of time (long period I consider over 5 years in CFB today), but I would have liked to see a more competitive performance from these Clones. In retrospect, I might have drank to much Kool-Aid in the beginning of the year following our bowl victory, and expected a little too much considering our schedule, our current athletes, and how long our staff has been in place - that is on my shoulders not this team.

Now that the season is underway, I think I have a better grasp of what these Clones are capable of and can temper my expectations accordingly. From this point I think we have a reasonable shot at 6-6, with a more probable outcome of 5-7 (lingering feeling that the K-state game will bite us in the *****). I would like to see us competitive in the upcoming game in Norman. However, I watched this team dismantle a very sound and improved Florida State group that have much better athletes than our beloved Clones, so an outcome like last Saturday could occur. I really feel the game in Austin is a good chance for this team to pick up a win, would have felt better if the game was in Ames. Nebraska very well might be the best team we face all year, and that would be saying a lot with our schedule. KU, CO, and Mizzou are teams I think we can play ball with.

Predictions:
OU = loss / just want to be in the game to get some confidence
UT = toss up / probably loss since in Austin but I think we have a great shot
KU = need to get a win / expect to win
NU = loss / see OU stance
CU = win / hopefully Buffs have gone 0-fer, team has given up, and Hawk is fired
MU = at home with bowl eligibility on the line, I think we get it done

Let me know what you guys are thinking, am I still drinking too much Kool-Aid or are these reasonable expectations.

Depends on what offense shows up for the Cyclones. If it's the one from the Tech game, and first quarter of the Utah game, then you guys stand a chance.

Otherwise, I'm not sure you'll make it past KU and maybe CU.

On the other side of the ball, the defense can't get gashed on big plays like they did last week. Granted, it also had to do with the fact the offense wasn't on the field for more than a play, but still...

I'm fine with being 3-3, I just wish that the Iowa and Utah games would have been a little more competitive rather than making us look like a JV team. I'm worried that Oklahoma will be the same and that could hurt the teams resolve for the remainder of the season.

I agree with your predictions from here on out though.

Also, as much as I hate that it would help Nebraska get a Big XII North title on their way out the door, I think Texas getting blown out by Nebraska this weekend would help our chances in Austin.

I think that's a pretty fair assessment overall. We HAVE to beat KU and CU, and steal one of the others. Probably Texas or Missouri. It sounds like crazy talk to think we could beat Texas, but UCLA did it, and they aren't all that great.

Missouri is a good team, but I think if we beat KU and CU, and had them coming to Jack with bowl eligibility on the line, the guys would find a way to pull it off.

Both units sucked. After the first quarter, the offense quit being able to move the ball, and thus the defense never got any rest. However, the defense was getting abused so badly, it was irrelevant. Throw in Utah scoring on special teams, or setting up short fields, and we were just whipped in all 3 phases of the game.

Exactly, especially if Mizzu loses to Nebraska. We'd be playing for a bowl eligibility, they'd be playing for, at best, playing in a slightly better bowl.

If Cyclone fans are honest with ourselves, had we been told Aug 1 that at the midway point ISU would be 3-3, most would have felt ISU was living up to, perhaps beyond expectations.

Heck, it took Chizlack a full year to win two and three games.

Mizzou always has issues with us in Ames.

Mizzou made us look like little girls on senior night last time they were here, it was ugly and i remember there being like 20k cyclone fans there the stadium had never looked so empty before to me it was november freezing cold night game. anyways thats when jeremy maclin was still there i just remember getting killed

Mizzou won that 2008 game like 52-17 or 58-17. They could have mailed it in and still ran over the clones by 14 points.

That was the good ol days of Gene "lets have the corners play 10-12 yards off the reciever and see what happens" Chizik.

I disagree with the comment about only 20,000 in the stands for that game. It was close to 30-35 IIRC for a 2-9 team on a 9 game skid. Turnout wasn't bad despite the frigid temps.

I'm happy to be 3-3.

I figured we would beat UNI, NIU, and maybe K-State, and probably lose to Iowa, Utah, and Tech.

Overall pretty happy with our record.

I agree. I had us 4-2 right knowing the KSU game was a toss up. Can't say I'm happy with 3-3, but it doesn't shock me. I am chalking up KU and a win. IF AA plays like he did vs TT, I so no reason why we can't be 6-6 and going to another bowl.

I think Mizzou, CU, and KSU are all similar teams and we hung with KSU. We really should have beaten them.

OU - squeaked by Cincy by2, Air Force by 3 and Utah State by 7. I'd say they are beatable if they underestimate you or don't shake off the rust before halftime.

UT - demolished @Austin by UCLA ranked 6-8th in the PAC-10 with USC and Arizona St:wideeyed:

NU
- Struggled with S. Dakota State... :skeptical:

CU
- Trashed Georgia was trashed by Mizz no idea what that means.

MU
- Required help from the officiating crew... which later admitted it was a blatant and bad no call... on a block to the back to score and beat San Diego State by 3.:skeptical:
