I saw the preview and thought about giving it a go. And I did enjoy Mom and Dad.
It’s fairly entertaining. Definitely not horror. Not even really comedic horror like Shawn of the Dead. Essentially atomic war creates an apocalypse where adults turn into “ghoulies” and kids try to survive in the world. But in the LA suburbs, where the main story takes place, there’s like, territories run by the high school cliques. So like, the jocks, the nerds, the drama kids, etc.
The main character and his “quest” to find the girl he loves is kind of lame, but there’s a 10 year old super genius, sociopathic girl and the relationship she builds with a former teacher turned ghoulie that still semi-functions as a somewhat human is genuinely endearing and really good.
Matthew Broderick is really good in it, as he plays the principal of the school. Lots of flashback scenes and fourth wall breaking scenes, with a lot of odes to Ferris Bueller, which are pretty fun.
There’s worse ways to waste your time.
