My son is a proud wearer of contacts as of yesterday. Things are going well, but Holy Mother of God, did we have a heck of a time putting them in this morning! Took us a half hour, and by the end, we were both cussing (well- me multiple times, him- one inadvertent s*** upon about the tenth drop).

He did really well getting them in and out at the eye doctor, but not so well this morning. Any tips?

It just takes practice and learning his own technique I think. When I first started wearing them it took me just as long. After a couple days or so he should have the hang of it. He just needs to practice and that's the best thing.

How old is he?

I was in 6th grade when I got mine, and it just takes practice. It gets easier and easier each day. I remember struggling the first day, too.

Just short of 11. The tough thing is that he can't see real well without them, so he's about a half inch off the eye when he goes to put them in. He had them squarely in place several times, but they wanted to stick to his finger more than his eye. That's probably our main problem.

I am assuming soft- they are two week lenses, and fold over on themselves really easily.

Yeah, I wear hard ones. If I left them in for two weeks, my eyes might seal shut.

I'd just go heavy duty on the solution as you put em in. Might get messy, but it helps.

Not sure why but I always put a few drops of saline solution on my finger tip before picking the contact up. Then the contact seems to attach itself to my eye and stay in place. I also put a drop of saline solution on the contact before putting it in my eye. Good luck! Contacts are so much better than glasses...but they can be a pain in the backside as well!

I often find myself at the end of long days looking forward to taking my contacts out because it feels great to take them out!

I remember having to get up an hour early to get mine in when I first got them. The trick I found to help was to have a small personal mirror set up, then stare at my eyeball in the mirror as I put it in. Try to distract myself from the fact I'm touching my eye, which I know is next to impossible. Have plenty of saline in the contact and it will help it stick to your eye.

The first couple days I had to have one of my parents hold my eyelids open as I slowly put the contact in ... then inevitably it would fold over or be in backwards. You get a lot better at it, but it takes a little time. By the end of the week he should be improving dramatically.

Although I had a buddy that needed his eyes held open for like the first year ... he's kind of a ***** though.

Put the contact on the very top tip end of the finger, they wont stick to your finger that way. Look in the mirror, stretch your eye as far open as possible and put the contact in. When you have it on the very end of your finger, the contact will basically grab the eye and stick instead of having to put your whole finger in your eye.

when i put them in i would sometimes have an air bubble under the contact. then when you blink it would fold over and pop out. to keep that from happening keep your finger on the contact when it touches your eye and move it around to work the air bubble out. but like everbody says it takes a while to get the tecnique down.

or you could do what i do. once i get them in i leave them in for 2 months straight.

just practice like 5-10 times each night until he can get them in under 10 minutes

I wish I could do that...but I would never be able to sleep! My eyes get way too dry at night!

I was 23 when I first got contacts and I spent an embarssing amount of time in the doctor's office trying to get them in the first time. So if you son managed there, he is already ahead of me.

It just takes practice though. It'll get easier as he gets used to poking at his eye and the feeling of the contacts. I agree that a drop of solution sometimes helps the contacts 'grab' on to the eye. Make sure that the contact is not inside out when he is trying to put it in. You can get in an inside out or backwards contact, but it is not easy and it hurts your eye. Soon enough he'll be able to pop them in without a mirror or solution :)

Good idea. The saline always helped me.

These are definitely soft contacts, from my limited experience/knowledge:smile:

That was always a tough part for me, because I really don't like anything going near my eyeball. I'm at the point now where contacts don't really work for me, but this always did give me trouble.

The first couple times are rough, my wife got contacts about 6 months ago and it took her forever it seemed to get them in the first time. But it gets easier and easier every time, I can pull mine out and pop it back in whenever now.
