QB play is key to winning in college FB. Since Mr Wallace has left ISU there have been 5 OCs at ISU. The results have all been the same an average at best offence. What this team needs is a better than average QB and things will improve a lot. You can bring Bill Walsh back from the dead to be your OC, but if he doesnt have a good QB he will look bad.

I'm affraid I strongly agree with the OP. And after listening to Messingham's interview on the radion this afternoon I'm even more convinced of it.

He has shown no ability to call plays to get the defense from crowding the line of scrimage and comming with pressure each down. He is essentially making it harder on the OL and QB each play. Teams like KSU and Baylor defenses have to be honest. With ours you don't. Defenses can pin their ears back and come.

He has shown NO ability to make adjustments. Does not seem to be offensive minded and see things they could exploit.

He does nothing to draw the defense out of positoin or keep them honest. He doesn't do any natuaral pics to get the WR free across the middle.

He will not try gadget plays cause he wants to stay ahead of the downs. But his worthless play calling all ready puts us behind. Thank god he wasn't the OC at UCONN last year or Lentz wouldnt have thrown a TD pass.

I can guarantee you a better offensive mind like Art Briles or Bobby Patrino would have that offense humming.

Teams are trying to make SJ beat them and well he has proven he cannot. If they can stuff the run and force ISU to throw it is game over. No matter what you call it wont work if your QB cannot make the needed passes.

When Walsh comes back from the dead to be OC, he will need a much better offensive line in addition to a new QB. Texas Tech's front D dominated the Cyclone OL.

And they beat the Hawks in Iowa City... regardless of the score that make up for a lot of other BS this year.

Mess needs to improve. WE ALL UNDERSTAND THAT. His play calling HAS been awful. WE ALL UNDERSTAND THAT. If Mess doesn't improve in that area at all this year than yes he was a mistake. We don't have time to give Mess 4 years to get things right. We have a team that can win NOW.

glad we got this horrible offensive game out of the way early in the season so the coaches know what to practice. i say give coach messingham this season to prove himself, and if he doesnt then get rid of him. i just dont feel good about him as our OC. the offense is very boring and way too predicatable

So we should be happy about losing a very winnable game?

I agree, the offense didn't have to do a lot, just not Mess up and keep putting the defense in bad field position and we still may have won. I'm not down on the zone read offense yet, but with SJ it's high risk, especially inside the 10 as we almost fumbled an exchange down there again on our only offensive td. Like somebody said, if you don't keep the defense honest with some screens and slants, it makes it tough on the o-line if the qb doesn't make good reads. If Mess wants to run so much zone read, I just don't think SJ has the experience and ability to run it well, so might as well see if Barnett can get the offense going. I know it was a mop up situation against Western Illinois, but Richardson ran it to perfection and drove the team quickly down the field for a td without throwing a pass (and I'm sure the defense also knew he probably wouldn't throw). Richardson looked completely comfortable running the zone read and made great decisions, and I assume he ran that offense in high school as Barnett did.

And we have the talent to open it up.

We could woo him with a brand new motorcycle and a hot young "assistant".

Nope. Count me out on that. I don't think the play calling has been bad. I think it's execution.

And we have the talent to open it up.

We don't have a single outside receiver that demands attention beyond the 4 star talents other B12 schools have at CB. Our 5 linemen can usually manage to block 4 guys, and sometimes even 5 (yay!). That leaves us with a QB, a RB, a slot guy, and another slot guy/RB to play 4 on 5 (or 6 when an OL screws up) against a defense. Just do the subtraction, Clones21, and try to figure out where we can beat a defense.

IIRC Messingham never averaged over 310 yards a game in either season as Offensive Coordinator at Missouri State. I think he has room to improve with some of the weapons we have and believe that he will

On a side note, people saying Herman was terrible, I'll wager dinner from Hickory Park that he is a head coach at a D1 A school by 2017. People that say he is cocky/arrogant/"little too smart for his own good," you should watch Urban Meyer, Mike Gundy, Mike Leach, Dana Holgerson, Rich Rodriguez, Larry Fedora, Gus Malzahn, Bobby Petrino, Art Briles, Sonny *****, etc...

I'm pretty sure that was a typo. When he wrote "Petrino would have it humming", pretty sure he meant "Petrino would be off getting a hummer". Saw it earlier, but trying to cut down on my grammar police.

People on here are saying we should have patience with our new OC? That is crazy. This is THE BIG 12! You better have an OC that is ready for this conference or you are toast. That means 30 pts a game to win, even with our defense. Our scheme may be okay, but I don't think Messs. has the instincts to push the right buttons at the right time, he is not good on his feet during live action. He is very slow to make adjustments to what the other team is doing and he doesn't make the other team pay for what they are trying to do to us. I'm rooting hard for him to show me something against a BCS team in those regards. He didn't against Iowa, and he couldn't against Tech..
