Pretty much a guarantee. Likely Wiggins.

I'll take that bet, since newcomer of the year excludes freshmen. Only new players from juco's or transfers may apply. Hence the back to back to back comment. Royce, Cylburn, and Kane???

Do you really think Clyburn would have won it over Maclemore or Smart if freshman were eligible?

Didn't realize that but that makes sense. Kane could definitely earn that this year.

I guess I don't understand the Percy didn't play well tonight thing. Seem to look decent to me.

I don't think he played bad. I just think people are going to be disappointed if they think he will be a different player this year. If he did improve this offseason, I will happily eat crow but a game against a D2 opponent is hardly enough of a test to prove anything.
I also though don't understand the Naz hate. The guy was excellent with the ball and his defense looked great to me. He was off from outside and maybe never will be a great outside shooter but if a few more of those shots fell from outside, he would be the talk of the night. Thomas and Blufords defense looked the worse of the night imo.
But really no sense in focusing on any of the bad as they took care of business and ISU fans got a win they desperately needed.

As far as Naz I guess we will have to wait and see. I am sure he is improved from last year and will see a few minutes each game. Likely a 10 min a game guy. You might be right about Percy. We are definitely going to need him to play a decent roll with this team this year because we just aren't very deep in the front court.

Try 15-20. Odds are he'll be one of the first two off the bench.

No argument there

Did anyone else feel like the PA guy really wanted to say Monte "Man Man" Morris every time Morris scored?

It was good to be back at Hilton!

One thing I took away from the game is that, right now, we have three really high quality players in Ejim, Niang, and Kane. I have seen many years where we only had one or two high quality players. To have three is pretty exciting.

Thomas and Morris both looked like nice players....hopefully they will be really good by the end of the year. I think both have very bright futures at ISU. Hogue looks like he is a nice player too. I love his aggressiveness on the boards.

CFH seems to have a lot of confidence in Naz, so hopefully he was just a little tight tonight. I do think he settled down as the game went on.

I have no idea how to rate the rest of them. I am not saying anything bad. I just think the top six players on this team are pretty evident right now. CFH obviously thinks Naz should be in that mix too. Still plenty of time for the others players to find their game/role.

I also thought it was fun to watch CFH during the first half. I am pretty sure he was not actively coaching. It seemed like he was just watching and throwing in players to experiment. I think he just wanted to see what he had. During halftime he started coaching and then it was over quickly.

.

This! He wants to see what these guys can do on their own under little instruction. Later he can plan a game around that.

great post and I especially agree with that last part. Very telling of how the game went. It was more of a glorified practice or Fred rather than a real game. Wonder what he saw in that first half.

Kane is better overall, but Morris is more of a pure PG, and also very good.

I think Morris could become a starter sooner than later.. It comes down to him or Hogue. Morris could even have the edge because we have more guards than Bigs.

Morris-Thomas-Kane-Hogue-Niang is what I would do until Ejim came back. Hogue first off the bench and Kane back to PG. Or flip it and Morris first off.

There's so much potential on this team, and it's so well rounded. Could be special.. And the crazy thing is next year should be real special(and I'm assuming we land Vaughn)

I didn't think effort was a problem at all. He had three rebounds and made a nice block. He made some nice post moves and had one bad shot. I would take that every time. We don't need him to be what you think he should be. We need him to be the best version of what he is. That means scoring in the post when there is an opportunity and taking up space while our starters get a rest.

Why do you expect him to have Hogue's style when we know he doesn't? That doesn't make sense to me.

Did you think Hoiberg was wrong in complimenting Percy's game tonight?

I guess you guys are right. I'll admit, I was a wrestler and don't know the finer points of the game.

It seems to me that I have seen other players that have had "the light come on" during their careers and improve their effort and game awareness. I must be mistaken though, so we should just let Percy make bad plays.

Yes, this game against a DII opponent, he wasn't AS BAD as he was last year. Hope that carries forward.

What the hell is this?

We are fans, we should cheer on the team and support the players. Scapegoating a player and ragging on his game in and game out is the worst aspect of a site like this, frankly it needs to stop ASAP.

Agreed- they came away with a solid win against a lesser appoinent while arguably the best player on the team was out and the second best had an off night. plenty of positives to look at from that game.

Very solid effort. I wouldn't be suprised to see the starting lineup all year being Kane/Thomas/Hogue/Ejim/Niang, as I think Morris is coming off the bench as 6th man is our best option. Those of you talking about Morris starting-- who is he replacing in that starting lineup once Melvin is back?

I love Hogue and Kane's toughness. While the last 2 years teams have been fun to watch and skilled as hell, these are the kinds of guys we've been missing. I've heard alot of Stinson comparisons for Kane, but I almost see some Jake Anderson. Now, obviously, Kane is bigger and stronger than Anderson, but what I am getting at is that he doesn't seem to excel at anything but he's tough as nails and he's going to get his points. Hogue is exactly what we needed down low.

I have complete faith that Georges is going to play better than he did last night. You could tell that he was pressing a bit, now being "the man" on this team, especially with Melvin out. He will get his, I have no doubt about it.

Morris and Thomas looked great. I don't doubt they will struggle, but I love what they bring to the floor. Morris is just a winner, you can tell that. Thomas has all the ability to thrive under Fred.

If we can get marginal production for some of the other guys-- Naz, SDW, Bluford and Percy-- I think we will be very solid this year.
