I forgot all about Panchero's. The El Gordo was awesome. Chipotle sucks compared to Panchero's.

Please tell me Jimmy John's is still there?

ok... so there used to be a non-corporate Panchero's that was actually good, where Mickey's if now? Why did they leave Ames, go corporate (ie sh*tty) and then come back with a very non-collegiate location? This is crazy... and of course CTAClone, Jimmy John's is still there, but it seems to have lost some of its luster. There are better drunk food options, ie Flying Burrito, gyro stand, and the one and only Super Dog, just to name a few

Yep, the 'good' Panchero's moved into (if I remember correctly) the old Bagel Shop location in Campus Town. I'd say it was '92 maybe '93 when they opened up there.

I graduated from ISU in 1984. The Cave Inn was a popular place since it was close to all the dorms, they had cheap beer, and the drinking age was 19 then. When the drinking age increased to 21 a lot of the bars closed up in Campustown.

Where was the Cave Inn located? I was a big People's guy when I was going to the bars on Welch (late 90's). Of course when I turned 21, we hit up Tazzels and the DL a lot.

If you don't know, Great Plains now has a second floor on half of the place. Best pizza in town...expanding!!

The Cave In is the same location Tazzles was. It was named the Cave In because when the Fire Station was being built the wall to the south of the bar Caved In.

Historically, I thought Pizza House was the best pizza in Ames. It had a very unique flavor that was NOT "main-stream pizza chain accepted"

Was Pizza House located on the SW corner of the Welch Avenue / Lincoln Way intersection, across Welch from People's Drug? If that's the one, I agree with you!

As for Pizza Pit, I lived at 2515 Hunt Street my senior year (1986) with five other guys (house now gone :sad9cd: ). We'd walk out our back door and go 150' down the alley to the Pit's back door for the $1.50 lunch special! Dinner was usually "two burgers for a buck" at the Hardee's on Welch...

This thread is awesome. Lots of gastronomical memories that I haven't dragged out and dusted off for a long, long time. Good stuff for sure.

What about that Thai place that was up above welch avenue station? Tep Thai or something? They had a dish called "Angry catfish" that would light your rear on fire. This stuff was soo good, but you could feel it burning it's way through your body for the next 24 hours. What did they spice that with, battery acid?

Was it Suko Thai? That was about 7 - 9 years ago. I would get the angry chicken - you could get it "pi$$ed off" (the hottest), which I would commonly do.
