I've ordered Pizza Pit a few times in Ames. Their delivery is usually fast, but the pizza is overpriced I think. I think I paid $10 for a medium.... maybe I'm just used to paying squat for Papa Johns since they give a Greek discount.

Papa Murphy's is the best pizza available in Ames. I would say George's is next, although overpriced, followed by Great Plains (also expensive).

Anybody ever eat at Rocky Racocco's that was right next to the Cave Inn. Very convenience and their breadsticks were awesome.

I just remembered that one.. Man I'm getting hungry

Flying Burrito is all we need. Chipotle (better than a$$holes Panchero's) is good, but nothing, and i mean NOTHING beats Flying at 2AM after night out.

PS, long live Home Team!

The Pancheros that used to be where Mickeys is was different man ... not the horse$hit they are now ...

They used to sponser a El Gordo (2 lbs burrito) eating contest on campus - saw a guy eat 4.5 lbs of burrito one year - I was told in 1999 it was still the record.

A few random rememberences (is that even a word?):

I remember buying drugs at Peoples when I was a freshman, and walking home from Peoples when I was a senior at 2 a.m. still carrying my book bag because we went straight from class to FAC.

Panchero's now is what happens to good restaurants when they go franchise. It was a whole different story before then, whith the big thing of steak hanging on a hook in the window.

And by the way how long has Do Biz been gone?

Can someone produce a timeline of what was once known as The Cave Inn. It was Tazzles when I was in school. That place finds new life with what seems like the same business model every few years.

I have also fell into this trap when I found Panchero's in Ankeny. I walked in hoping to get the El Gordo. But all they had was crap they passed off as burrito ingredients. It was terrible. The old Pancheros in Ia City and where Mickey's is at now was very different. The ingredients were fresh from the grill and nothing was commercialized. The El Gordo was my favorite late night after bar food. The "gyro man" was a close second.

I thought rocky's was bad pizza. Just a step up from little sh Italy. The Cave Inn. Wow. I totally forgot about that place. What about that asian place in the same building upstairs? They had an orange chicken (not deep fried) that was awesome.

To me, great plains was the best in Ames, glad to hear they are still getting it done. I could only afford to eat there a few times when I was in school, but I made up for it my first few visits back.

I was there shortly after Tassles closed, but I'm not sure where it was - was it where Sips is now? If so, I think Sips has been around since at least 2000.

Where the Deans List used to be could have been it too - that place has opened up as something new every 2-3 years.

I graduated from ISU in 1984. The Cave Inn was a popular place since it was close to all the dorms, they had cheap beer, and the drinking age was 19 then. When the drinking age increased to 21 a lot of the bars closed up in Campustown.

Now I'm hungry!! :growl5cj:

Do they deliver to downtown Des Moines??

When we first moved to ankeny there was a pit here also. It was great, I ordered it at least once a week after I left Ames. I guess I was the only one because they closed up shop in 99.

When did Minsky's close? They had great pizza and their strawberry daiquaris were cheap and tasty.

They opened in a new building over by the west HyVee around '03-'04 but it went under within a year. It was a mexican joint when I left in '05.

Late Night Special: 2 mediums for about $13

One summer in the early 80's they had pitchers of beer for a quarter!
And they still have the Klipsch KG2 speakers hanging from the ceiling.

Does anyone out there remember when Thumbs Up was in campustown?

Also many a Thursday Night was spent at the Cave-In "socializing."

I vaguely remember Thursday nights at Thumbs Up...I believe it was because of the 75 cent GNT's!

Historically, I thought Pizza House was the best pizza in Ames. It had a very unique flavor that was NOT "main-stream pizza chain accepted" Plus their dough was strongly herbed, and they used very little refined sugar in their sauce. GPS&D was pretty good, as they used more than mozarella in their cheese.

Still, Pizza Pit is such a staple, I'm glad it's still there. I spent 8 years running Italian restaurants, and I still like to take my wife and kids to "The Pit." I know it's just cheap pizza, but I love the atmosphere.

That would be Little Taipei. $2.99/plate!

Little Taipai is moving out of their original place to where Davinci's used to be (it was Cafe Shi for a while...). My guess is that the booming bass from below (Dangerous Curves) at night encouraged them to look elsewhere.

I still prefer Cocost, which is still around. Does anyone know if it's true that the owners of Cocost and Taipai used to be married? Or did I just dream that up? I think the Cocost guy lives out back in an RV.
