The first was Is She Really Going Out with Him. Very punkish/new Wave. Was kind of a shock to hear him move into a more classical style jazz direction.

Lots of drunk guys singing that song together is what I remember during that period. So another great topic. Pop songs that are great drunk buddy songs.

Seems like he came on strong just before the MTV era. I wonder if he didn't have that staying power because he's such a goofy looking dude. What a great song writer though! I guess Video Killed the Radio Star. (Also on the GTA: Vice City soundtrack!)

Ironic now that Internet Killed the Video Star.

Another one popped into my head this morning: "They Don't Know" by Tracey Ullman from her debut album, "You Broke My Heart In 17 Places." The 1983 song peaked at #8 in America and #2 in the UK. She didn't have another hit here, but made her mark on tv with "The Tracey Ullman Show" in the late 1980s. That show launched "The Simpsons" as a series of 'shorts' during each episode. She's done several other shows over the years for American audiences, but "They Don't Know" was her first exposure in the States. The video has a cameo by Paul McCartney (yes, he was in a band before Wings).

I didn't know she sang that song. I thought she was just famous for being the star of that mediocre TV show which gave The Simpsons their start.

WHAT THE ACTUAL ****?!?! She sang that song? I remember it as the theme song for her show, but I never knew she was a musician... like ever?

I've really been listening to a lot of Giant lately. Dann Huff really is underrated as a guitarist. I almost have to put him up with the likes of George Lynch from Dokken. Three songs off the album "Last of the Runaways" made it in the top 50.

Looks like she only recorded two music albums: the one where this track came from in 1983 and a follow-up in 1984, which failed to gain any traction in the U.S. "They Don't Know" wasn't the theme for her American tv debut, though. I don't know what it was called, but it wasn't that single.

I really liked this album a lot. Hard to believe he's one of the biggest producers (and musicians) in Nashville today. Huff has been nominated for 31 Country Music Association awards (for either Musician of the Year or Producer), winning 5 times, including the 2016 Musician trophy.

According to wikipedia:

George Clinton was hired to write and perform the show's funk-infused theme song, "You're Thinking Right."

That's a really good song that I don't think I've ever heard before. Groovy and probably out of it's era in the early 80s.
I had that cassette/CD in the rotation for many years. I think it was called Body and Soul, and he recorded it in some old room he liked in NYC.

Looking at Joe Jackson songs and got major flashbacks on this one! Talk about a cool tune that you don't hear much anymore. A much more pop-centric tune than the tune just referenced. I remember if from one of the Grand Theft Auto (Vice City I think) soundtracks from when you would steal a car and have this on the car radio! I'd steal cars just to hear the awesome songs.

Seems like Joe Jackson is just a forgotten artist all together. Here's a third hit from him in an almost completely different style that I forgot about and didn't know it was from the same guy as Steppin Out. More of a rock tune than that pop synth classic.

Holy crap Joe Jackson was a great song writer. How hard would it be to write three huge and awesome hits in basically three different genres?

Love Steppin Out. Somehow I've failed to see JJackson live.

Peaked at #4 in 1975. When I recently rediscovered this song, I assumed it was a Grand Funk cover of an older song. But not. Mark Farner wrote it. A good one.

Good one. I thought there might a Grand Funk example, then forgot to check into it. We're an American Band and Some Kind of Wonderful still surface regularly, this one I rarely hear. Loco-Motion cover doesn't come around much anymore, either. "Bad Time" might be my favorite of the band's prominent hits; SKOW probably a close 2nd.
