I want to mention that, although a lot of people hear "I Will Always Love You" strictly as a love song, it's actually a goodbye song written with love. Dolly Parton wrote it as a farewell message to her long-time professional partner and mentor, Porter Wagoner, with whom she recorded and appeared on his variety show that began in the mid 1960s. She knew it was time for her to go out on her own as an artist and wanted Wagoner to know that she was forever grateful for the opportunity he gave her. The original 1974 recording went to #1. Dolly re-recorded it for the 1982 film "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," and it went to #1 again. Then, we all know what happened with "The Bodyguard" soundtrack. Here is the 1974 version:
