Well, Americans:
What, nothin' better to do?
Why don't you kick yourself out?
You're an immigrant too.
Who's usin' who?
What should we do?
Well you can't be a pimp
And a prostitute too

Kind of random one here but always found this as a good pick me up song with some inspiring lyrics to stay positive and be a good person.

"You know a smile never goes out of style
So brighten up the one that you wear
Let it shine and you just might find
You'll lighten up the load that you bear"

"You know a kind work never goes unheard
But too often goes unsaid
And on the tongue of the old and the young
Gets swallowed up with pride instead"

Kind of along the same theme as the song above and I know some people can't stand Nickelback but the lyrics to this song are great and though provoking IMO. I guess the first verse pretty much sets the tone for how the rest of the song plays out.

"My best friend gave me the best advice
He said each day's a gift and not a given right
Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind
And try to take the path less traveled by
That first step you take is the longest stride"

"No one gives a damn about the things I give a damn about"

I could do this thread only on Isbell lyrics.

On a lark, on a whim, I said "There's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them"
And his fist cut the smoke I had an eighth of a second to wonder if he got the joke
In the car headed home She asked if I had considered the prospect of living alone
With a steak held to my eye I had to summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye,
And another brief chapter without any answers blew by

Behind you
"Every time I take a look,"
"Inside that old and fabled book,"
"I'm blinded and reminded of,
"The pain caused by some old man in the sky"

This is an old country blues song by Rabbit Brown that a million people have sung, but this is a perfect lyric

I bought the groceries and I paid the rent
I bought the groceries and I paid the rent
She tried to make me wash her clothes
but I got good common sense

my favorite lyric from that song is what's in the screen capture "Some say you might go crazy, then again it might make you go sane"

The patron saint of Rock and roll. Great rock tunes played with passion but some very cleverly phrased lyrics that just seem to paint the picture without a lot of extra verbiage.

"They furnished off an apartment with a two-room Roebuck sale.
The coolerator was jammed with TV dinners and ginger ale."

Coolerator is a great made-up word combining cooler and refrigerator that fits the song perfectly!

"They had a hi-fi phono, boy did they let it blast.
700 little records, all rock, rhythm and jazz
But when the sun went down the rapid tempo of the music fell
... you never can tell"

Probably one of my top 2 or 3 Elvis Costello songs. Great lyrics from beginning to end but this little phrase always seems the most clever by a smidgen.

"Tryin to be so bad, is bad enough
Don't make me laugh by talkin tough
Don't put your heart out on your sleeve
When your remarks are off the cuff"

Behind you
"The dog lifts his gaze to plead,"
"Believes the wizard has a magic stick,"
"Leans his weight into my tweed,"
"I give an unholy hand to lick"

"Last year was a son of a *****, for nearly everyone we know"

yes, yes it was.

the prophetic-ness of that lyric reminds me of this one:

"tall buildings shake, voices escape singing sad sad songs"

That album was initially supposed to be released on 9/11/01 on-line, but they delayed it a week after the attacks

I always liked this verse from this song.

Especially the "Throw "I love you" echoes down the canyon. And lie awake at night 'till they come back around." that is at about the 1:25 mark.
