we have twelve more wins right now than we did all of last season; we already have 200% more conference wins than we did last season. we all had low expectations that, even playing an easy OOC (and there were some good wins in there, let's keep that in mind), were blown completely out of the water. now we are coming down to earth again. the fact that this cobbled together team in year one of a new, young coach's career here is not in fact the #8 team in the country does not mean he is a bad coach, or this year is anything short of miraculous. we should keep our pre-season expectations in mind.
Ok, a season like last year should never be the bar. That was one of the worst seasons a power conference team has ever had. With the number of buy games with teams in the 200s and 300s provided you are hired with a reasonable amount of time to put together a roster and retain recruits, a power conference team should win 7-8 plus games no matter what. Drew won 8 games coming into about the worst situation possible short of sanctions - a bad program with players murdering each other.

Still, yes this has been and still remains an incredible turnaround. But it is possible to understand that being 14-5 is a great turnaround while being pissed about two games of incredibly terrible offense. And offensive problems that go far beyond ‘well, shots didn’t fall.’ Bad shooting teams win all the time. Bad shooting teams generate offense. This has been two games of chewing up 12 seconds to get into some sort of action, run the high post weave and be on the verge of a couple give second counts, and then get a contested jumper as the shot clock ticks down.

Disagree. Expectations change as the season plays out. We are all ecstatic and understand this is way better than last year but when you put together the non-conference we did and then have two more wins against Q1 teams (Tech and Texas) in the first five conference games it’s NCAA tournament or bust. Plus we nearly took down KU in Lawrence if it weren’t for that missed goaltending.

This team needs to find a way to get back on track because this fan will absolutely be super disappointed if we aren’t in the NCAA tournament come March. These guys are good enough to do it as we have seen, and they still can. The number of Q1 wins we have is there and any win we get aside from Missouri is still a good or great win.

there's a difference between you being disappointed at the outcome of mid-season adjusted expectations and the season being bad, though. the damage that has been undone this season is massive. otherwise, it's like--we made it to the final four but did not win the title, which were the expectations i had once we made it there, so the season is a disappointment.

Just like tj said in the presser, our offense is much better when we play good defense. Today, we played horrible defense. On to the next…

tonight wasn't horrible defense. It wasn't our best effort, but if TJ really thinks that the defense was the problem today he is really stupid. I don't think he's stupid, so he's probably going back to the idea that defensive effort is the one thing you can control. But at some point the coach's job is to put the team in better positions offensively.

i agree that the offense needs significant changes, that it is failing right now, and that tj is not managing the game as well as i hope he does. i do not think that makes this season a disappointment, and i do not think that these are realistic expectations of a coach during his first year in a power conference, let alone the meat grinder that is this iteration of the big 12. but i definitely, absolutely agree we need to see tj grow as a coach and come up with solutions for the team.

We will just disagree on this so no point talking about it. It was basically an entirely new team this year. Had this been the same roster that was here last year and done this maybe that’s more in line with what you are saying. Even then I wouldn’t go with it.

This team of basically all new guys ended up being a lot better than we thought. And the defense alone is extremely good. So yes you adjust your expectations as you go and not making the NCAA at this point would be a failed season while at the same time acknowledging it was better than last year and we are trending much better. But as the poster a few above me said, if you are using last year as any bar yikes. Have some expectations man.

i'm not using last year as the bar. i'm using last year as reality. last year happened. we went 2-22. we were the embarrassment of the league. you guys seem to want to discuss the way it ought to be. i'm trying to talk about the reality of the season, the team, and the coach.

He cleaned house. He got players here. He is ultimately responsible for the players he got here. It is his job to put them in the best position to win. He has done that on defense. Maybe it is time he tried something new on offense.

i definitely think we all believe he should try some new things on offense.

Here's hoping. I'm not convinced the new things will work. But he owes it to these players that have played their asses off for him to try.

Yeah and the reality of this season is we are loads better. Great we are all very happy for that and beyond ecstatic. But like most things in life both things can be, and are, true.

This team was as high as a three seed just a short time ago on BracketMatrix and even before today was the highest five seed I believe. This late into the season if you don’t make the tournament with the resume we have thus far, that’s a big disappointment. It just is no matter how you slice it.

Regarding playing time, TU should play as much as he can go along with IB and Hunter. Start Jones over George. If Gabe is not 'on' with his shot, give his playing time to Jaz and Grill.

And as far as our offense goes, limit the 3s, take the corner shot if it's there.

TJ and the team will be fine. Limit TOs, take better shots, and develop TU as your #2.

Like don't you think that we could run some offense through Enaruna? He can't possibly be as bad on offense as the crap we trotted out there today.
It makes no sense that offense gets run thru Conditt and Jones. Someone said it above and I'll reiterate it, those 2 guys should only be touching the ball after rebounding it or catching a lob. Enaruna is way more versatile offensively than either of those guys

I'm hopeful that these last two games will be about as bad as it can or will get and the team can bounce back. They will have at least a couple more games where they shoot well and that alone probably means at least 3 or 4 wins. Grab one or two more and you're in the tourney.

Just a real awful one today, though. Not a "burn the tape" game, but hopefully one that will be a catalyst in change for the better on offense.

Offense is clearly struggling but they got some great looks today and didnt capitalize. How many missed lay ups and wide open 3s did we have. Process was good to an extent and looks were good. Players finishing was awful.

I've been down on Grill. I've counted 8 games where he has hit more than 1 three. 3 or 4 of those were against good teams. Tech twice, Creighton and maybe one other. So I probably shouldn't have been as down as I am. But at some point a junior that is a shooter has to hit some shots in big games.
