I don't think there's any chance Iowa wins 9-10 this year. I think this is not a good Iowa team that has zero offense and teams will be able to pass against them better than the past. I look for them to have one of the worst years in a long time and Kirk will be gone. Look for K-State's coach to take that job.
Agree. It's one thing to win when you have a 9/10 defense and a 12/10 special teams play; that's enough to overcome a 0/10 offense.

But that "generational" special teams play is gone. And the defense looks more like 8/10.

The margin for error, which was small, is now VANISHINGLY small.

Right now, a lot of their games look like toss-ups to me. OSU is a loss, and NW & Troy are wins. But the others are probably 50/50. That looks like 7-5 or 8-4 at best.

That win will be remembered for a long time no matter what Iowa does. I get you're trying to ho-hum it, but you're ignoring reality.

Haha, OK.

Maybe it's me living out of state but my reality is watching two average-decentish looking teams play Saturday, and ISU pulled it off by finishing.

The narrative was how ISU's been the better team all of these years but am I supposed to be floating on cloud 9 because of one win and get a poster from it?

If Iowa had won the game then I’d say yes they lose only a couple of games the rest of the way. But the way they lost affects the morale a little bit and I can see a lot more games in play for a loss than if they had won.

Makes you wonder if Kirk is out after this season. Brian is gone. A lot of seniors are gone. The cupcake schedule is gone. The landscape of college football has changed. They can probably still win 9-10 games this year, and he can go out crying and the Hawkeye fans can give him a proper send off.
With the huge buyout that UI would owe Kirk, I don't think they would fire him after this year. But . . . with all the seniors graduating, if Kirk doesn't retire soon, I can see the Iowa program descending into mediocrity as happened at FSU, PSU and VT when Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno and Frank Beamer (and probably others) kept holding on. Those schools weren't willing to get rid of their icon coaches (until finally in Penn State's case with the Sandusky situation).

Why would the KSU coach take the EIU job, 12 months changed everything here. The EIU job without the B10 West schedule every year is going to be a lot tougher. The B12 without OU and UT becomes a lot easier to win and make the playoff. EIU doesn't have the money to pay the man $10 to $12 million a year and he seems like he likes it at KSU, close to AD and is reaching the point where he is better off staying at KSU, because moving to EIU is a lateral move now.

I think he hangs on at least through the '26 season. There's zero chance they fire him after this year barring a massive scandal. And there's zero chance of him retiring barring a health issue of some kind.

Looking down the road, next year is NOT set up well for them between the schedule and roster turnover. Kirk will be back in 2026, and by then his buyout will be down and they're well into the territory where his contract length/retirement speculation will start to affect recruiting. I think that's the soonest they'd try to push him out.

Still maintain the idea that Kirk is not going to walk away from the job with 5 years remaining on the contract too much money to walk away from and he wants to set the all time record for wins by a B10 conference coach. Already holds the most loses record and will have both.
I am not even sure if Iowa would offer to buy him out that he would leave after the year, the guy has always been arrogant, and is still loved by the donor base, so I just do not see EIU putting together a package he would be willing to accept.
This was their season to get into the playoff, they only play Ohio State that will be better than them, the rest will be equal or lesser opponents and like you said the schedule gets a lot tougher next season, when they have to play Oregon, USC, Penn State and Wisconsin and Nebraska programs that have turned the corner, throw in a game at Ames and they will struggle to get to .500 overall with the talent they have returning.
Link? all time lost record???

Whatever works for you but if Iowa goes something like 7-5 and unranked I'm not sure who would look back and say it was some big deal.

People melted down over a 21-3 slow burn style win two weeks ago so of course they melt down in a close loss. They melt down over ISU winning close away conference basketball games.

They'll be back at it in two weeks if Arkansas State gives ISU fits.
I sort of get what you are trying to argue but both ISU and Texas finished the regular season 7-5. Two meh teams. How is that better than a comeback win on the road, against your rival, 34 second drive with no timeouts and then drilling a 54 yarder?

Is this a serious question?

Ferentz in the twilight of his career is seriously underutilizing Iowa’s potential. The assets and resources of the B1G, the proximity and connection to Chicago and the rest of prime Bid Ten recruiting territory.

We’re better off the longer he sticks around. Especially if they brought in a young offensive hotshot like Scheelhaase is supposed to be.

Well, at least until CMC kicks it up yet another notch or two. Another few years, say.

A guy who mistook Iowa AND Illinois State for Northern Illinois? Nah.
He’s no Jim Zabel, that’s for sure. :)

(Zabel was the voice of my childhood, growing up in southeast Iowa … I remember listening to his morning sports score report on WHO every day before I got on the bus for school. But man, he overstayed his time as Hawkeye PBP man, he couldn‘t keep track of names or game situations the last couple of seasons.)

Taller and faster. Very possible. I'm not sure he tackles as well though.
Darien is a very intriguing player. I feel a lot better about his position after watching him play the first 2 games. He's a player I'm going to keep an eye on. He has the ability to make some plays.

Also, how do we feel about the LB position now? I'm quite impressed with Ebel and Brezina. Depth has taken a big hit there for sure, but those two appear to be very good young players!

The Hawkeye fan copium is strong this week lol.
At the last day of my eastern Iowa class reunion, one of my classmates was grumbling, “That game end d horribly yesterday.”

I piped up cheerfully, “I thought it ended wonderfully!”

He turned and glowered at me. “Oh, you’re one of those, are you?”

So I pulled up my orange sweatshirt (the only warm thing I’d packed). You can guess what color was underneath.

We both laughed. It was great.

Iowa will have 45-50 million more a year than K-State just off the media deal and I bet their football already brings in more and their Nike contract is probably a lot more. Iowa has the money to double K-State and probably double the NIL also if they wanted to. Rumor is it's where Klieman wants to eventually be.
