Total speculation on my part.
EJ may have originally cut Illinois but with "home" state politics he was advised to add them and needed some time to update his announcement post graphic.
EJ won't need to take an OV there (or Mizzou) due to location thus it isn't there is no problem adding them to the original 5 as the +1. It would save him a few month of ragging from the local fan base.
He's from St. Louis. I wouldn't think Illinois basketball would have much power there.

I know that, but St. Louis is a lot different than Chicago. I wouldn't think the Illinois fan base is very large there. That's almost SEC territory.

Fair point I did realize that and why I put quoutes around "home" state in my speculation post. As Cyforce stated EJ will be eligible for the Illinois player awards including Mr. Basketball thus the optics of eliminating the state school could come into play and those votes are from a lot of the Illini fan base.
As we seen with THT recruitment they can be pretty sensitive when losing a recruit.

Is Illinois the worst amateur basketball athletic state ever? No other state get's into high school kids business like it. The leaders of AAU and High school basketball only care about themselves and not the students. It's basically like a mafia run state but with AAU basketball as the way to profit.
Unfortunately, this is not just Chicago. It is pretty much any major market. We just hear about it most because of it being closest to us and we are in on recruits from that area. There are a lot of great AAU programs in the state of Illinois that don't have corruption or coaches trying to move up in coaching by using student athletes. I think the major thing that may be different from Chicago to other major markets where this is also a normalcy, is that the media knows about it and is not afraid to stir it up when they hear about it. The city of Chicago media coverage on Prep recruits is as solid of coverage as you will find, and with that big of a microscope, people are going to be able to point at stuff and say "that is wrong" "that shouldn't be happening". Problem is, coaches don't really care if they continue to coach, and the biggest AAU programs where this is happening, they have so many coaches now on so many age levels that you can't have the constant eye on these guys like you could back when they started. It is more about the AAU environment as a whole right now, it is glorified pickup games with everyone involved, including the coaches, trying to put on their best face for the programs in attendance.

But I digress.

I agree to a certain extent. However, Chicago is the absolute worst.

There are equally bad environments, but being that 3 of the biggest AAU programs in the country are located in Illinois, we get to see it a lot more often. But Chicago is terrible, I don't mean to say it isn't. It's just not alone.
