All we have is memories at this stage of this ownership. Sad situation with little hope in sight.

You've actually been to the WS more recently than the Yanks. Last 15 years the Yanks are just good enough to qualify for post-season but never good enough for the WS. This year will be the same, some really great players but not a great team.

I remember that World Series too. It's when I first became a Cardinals fan.

It really was a great series. :) 13 year old me probably didn't appreciate that as much than as I do looking back. Mantle, Maris, Whitey Ford versus Gibson, Flood, Brock, McCarver! And the Boyer brothers, Ken for the Cards and Clete for the Yanks. Mel Stottlemyre is still one of my favorite Yankee starter.

WS was such a big deal back than that they had a TV on in the old gym for "study hall" were you could watch if not in class.

Ah, yes, the days when World Series games were played during school/work hours, in the sunshine like God intended, instead of reaching the 7th inning at 10:40 pm or something.

Just turned game on. Not sure why I had it in my head Gibson was a lefty. Maybe the Yanks can win it in spite of having a rookie can of corn on the mound for them.

At least four members of those '64 World Series teams went on to have long broadcasting careers: Mike Shannon, Tim McCarver, Bob Uecker and Tony Kubek.

After the series, the Yankees fired their manager, Yogi Berra, and hired Johnny Keane--who had managed the Cardinals.

Was the start of dark times for the Yanks. Little boy me was a bit spoiled in the early 1960's and I won't see the Yanks back in the WS until I was out of college.

Okay, so Contrearas and Gray say they want to remain Cardinals. Contreras switching to 1B.

At least it provides a core to restructure both the offense and the pitching staff around.

Presumably Arenado chose differently? It would be nice to get something in return.

Not looking forward to the season, instead of increasing payroll we are just spending more in the minor leagues, and cutting at the major league level. More robbing Peter to pay Paul and hoping the fans will buy it. Attendance will drop like a rock this common season.

And that’s what should happen. The organization has been in a doom circle of not being able to develop your minor leaguers well and trying to offset that by spending too much money on bad assets in free agency. Take your lumps for a few years and fix the development and supplementing the homegrown talent through free agency. Can’t just keep throwing money at the duct tape and not actually fix the problem

As I understand it, Arenado's choice would be to reject trades to teams he didn't want to go to.

What bothers me is the club's apparent choice (and message to him) that they're willing to trade. It appears to me they're cashing it in as far as wanting to contend. They're going to "retool". I've not see them signal this before.

They should have been doing both, letting the minor leagues flounder because of lack of coaches should have nothing to do with how much money the team is spending at the major league level. The ownership group was cutting corners, and it finally has caught up with them, so now they are going to shitcan the team in St. Louis, but start spending money down in the minors? How about the ownership group starts spending more money overall instead of worrying about building and paying off Ball Park Village, one and two.

Top three in attendance year after year, price for a beer in the stadium is pushing $10 bucks each, nothing is cheap there, and they are crying about money? BS, they are raking it in, and instead of putting it back into the team and the orginazation are skimming off the top to get their other projects going so they can make even more money.

I've been around teams like that before (Rockies) and seen others do the same (Pirates, Marlins) and it feels like we're headed in that direction. For the first time, we decided to go to Cincinnati instead of St. Louis to see a Cardinals game this year.

We started doing the same thing years ago, its cheaper to go see them in Cincinnati, KC or some place else and you can get better seats for a cheaper price. We saw them play the Expos in Montreal a couple of series, because the exchange rate at the time made tickets and hotels about 60% of what they were in St. Louis. Saw them in Dallas a couple of years ago and the year before that in Atlanta.

We went to Busch for a day game maybe three seasons ago on Mother's day. It was freezing cold, and they wouldn't let anyone into the stadium until maybe an hour before the game. I thought: what kind of outfit is this? They had gone cashless (although this seems to be the trend). As you say, the seats and beer are more expensive. And the neighborhood has deteriorated.

We are looking at seeing them in Colorado this coming year. I have been to Busch Stadium plenty of times, its fun to see them on the road, and generally its cheaper or not any more than seeing then in St. Louis, except for the drive to the game.
