Have you guys gone back to watch it?

I've watched it probably 30x now.

I know they ruled forward progress... but I don't think there was any whistle that stopped the play. The umpire? (the ref behind the offense) threw the beanie denoting a fumble, but then that was the guy who immediately went to the PA and announced the ruling (without conferring with the other officials).

I admit I have not rewatched it, I don't typically have time to watch a game again. I recall them blowing it dead and thinking it was pretty quick, but I'll take your word that there was not an actual whistle blown.

yup. felt closer to 1/2 at times but that's cause it was hard to pick out the ISU cardinal versus the UH red. Pretty healthy contingent nonetheless
This is why I will generally wear gold when we are playing a team that has red for a primary color. I will also avoid gold if they have gold as a primary color. Gotta show out for my Cyclones!

The whistle was later than I recalled and it is after the ball is on the ground, but it's very very clearly BEFORE Singleton recovers the ball.

Play in question is at 2:57:

Isn't there a clear recovery rule that will give the ball to the recovering team even if there is a whistle? Or is that NFL?

And then the guy he did [eventually] encounter was totally lost, so he easily slung him down, which carried his momentum forward even more! Clearly the defender wasn't "fooled" by him being downfield.

I was always taught to give an extra yard to be on the safe side, but sounds like from other comments there is a point of emphasis in the NCAA now to be pretty strict on this, due to the rise of RPO's.
Even with point of emphasis when I stop the video on my DVR as the ball is released he is very close to being just at 3 yards. The blue line is not totally accurate. The nose of the football at snap was entirely across the 16. If he is off at all it can't be more than a couple of toes. We should remember this play when tempted to complain about only scoring 20 against UH and not reaching the end zone until the end of the 3rd Q. That was a 6 or 7 point swing since this drive ended up with a missed FG after the TD was called back.

I was just watching the coaches show and CMC said that this game should have swung a lot quicker than it did and how the 2nd play of the game was a fumble. CMC said he doesn't know how that gets missed, but it was.

I just went back to watch it and it absolutely WAS a fumble recovered by Singleton. Beau Freyler made the hit that caused it. The refs claimed forward progress, but that's BS... yeah his forward progress was stopped when Beau punched the ball out.

It is what it is, but I found it noteworthy.
I thought that too. And TV conveniently didn’t show a replay of it
