i was at the game. Primo seat for $15 , it was so easy to sneak down to lower level.

The first half was so painful. I didn’t understand why we didn’t go to TE’s. I remember only 1 incomplete pass. to a TE. What am I missing?
So what was attendance? 25% ISU?

My fault. Second half, 1:30 left in 3rd Qtr., Donovan Smith meets Mr. Orange, 1-2 yd gain. Dom picks him up and throws him back. Pretty athletic and a feat of strength!

Great play by the Big Citrus! How do you go about getting a GIF for that play, though? It would be pretty cool if you could.

Haha, Yes!!! You did it!

There were a few other game worthy gifs possibilities, but I do like this one! It epitomizes the Defense, and Big Citrus is a big part of that, pun intended!

I had started to look up how to make gifs. I don't think it would be that hard, but would take a little time to learn how to do it. Good job!!!

Technically, yes, it was a penalty, but MAN -- that's ticky-tacky!!!
I think most officials are a little more lenient than that.

Also, pretty sure #61 got mixed up and thought it was a run play. Maybe a couple guys did.

Watching the video replay (with low expertise about blocking schemes) looks to me like all the linemen "fired" to sell the run-fake, and Barrett didn't encounter anyone ... either missed his target or the guy was farther downfield and left him in no man's land.

~11:21 3Q game clock, 24:30 mark on video

And then the guy he did [eventually] encounter was totally lost, so he easily slung him down, which carried his momentum forward even more! Clearly the defender wasn't "fooled" by him being downfield.

I was always taught to give an extra yard to be on the safe side, but sounds like from other comments there is a point of emphasis in the NCAA now to be pretty strict on this, due to the rise of RPO's.

One late thought I’ve been meaning to share. I know both Abu Sama and Jaylon Jackson are both fast. Very fact, each having run well sub-11.0 100m’s on high school.

But if you look at their two long runs against Houston, in each case they’re getting caught by a UH defender. I think it was #1 and #2 for Houston, though I never looked to see who they were.

Jackson got caught, Abu was watching the monitor and veered to his left not to be.

Just shows you the kind of speed and athleticism UH is putting out on the field.

Man, that had to be close to out before whistle

That's what I thought.

Wish we would have seen a replay of the no fumble

I was just watching the coaches show and CMC said that this game should have swung a lot quicker than it did and how the 2nd play of the game was a fumble. CMC said he doesn't know how that gets missed, but it was.

I just went back to watch it and it absolutely WAS a fumble recovered by Singleton. Beau Freyler made the hit that caused it. The refs claimed forward progress, but that's BS... yeah his forward progress was stopped when Beau punched the ball out.

It is what it is, but I found it noteworthy.

The refs blew the whistle WAY too early on that play and once they did that, there's nothing that can be done about it.

That's possible, but really doesn't seem to be the case from the broadcast. You can see both line judges and one field ref. None make any motions or signal to call the play dead until well after singleton has the ball. I can't hear any whistles until much later either. And given the lack of crowd, I'd suspect we could hear them on the broadcast.

Like I said, it's possible, but I don't see any evidence of that.

It looks like just a blown call - which totally happens every game. Being this early in the game, I don't think the refs were exactly "warmed up" either. They missed a couple easyish holding calls on the big run the play prior.

I agree they blew the whistle too early on that play, and I wonder if they realized that and adjusted for the rest of the game. Considering how quickly they stopped play for forward progress on that play, I'm surprised they didn't blow it dead on Sama's long TD before he broke out of the scrum.

I haven't rewatched it, but distinctly remember hearing a whistle almost immediately when the scrum formed and just putting my head in my hands once JR emerged with the ball. There was definitely a whistle before he came out of the pile.

Have you guys gone back to watch it?

I've watched it probably 30x now.

I know they ruled forward progress... but I don't think there was any whistle that stopped the play. The umpire? (the ref behind the offense) threw the beanie denoting a fumble, but then that was the guy who immediately went to the PA and announced the ruling (without conferring with the other officials).

On rewatching it, you can very clearly see the ball on the ground, singleton picking it up then the whistles blow.

The whistle was later than I recalled and it is after the ball is on the ground, but it's very very clearly BEFORE Singleton recovers the ball.

Play in question is at 2:57:
