The way BYU has been playing for the last month, I give them an really good chance.Houston is overdue for a stinker. But BYU is also overdue for a stinker. Should be a good matchup.

That's a long answer to say noOfficiating is SO subjective. They have to make instantaneous judgments on things that happen in tenths of a second, and the reality is that they often miss things or make mistakes. If THE OFFICIALS, just feet away from the incident, miss calls, I don't have much confidence in the judgment of any fan from any team watching from the stands or on TV.
I also think that anyone enthusiastic enough to follow basketball probably wears mental glasses in their team's colors. Consequently, they think any calls FOR their team are obviously correct while any calls AGAINST their team are questionable at best. Not that fans are prejudiced or anything!
Bottom line: I think the officials make a fair number of mistakes, but I don't think it's deliberate or indicative of bias. I will say this: three years ago when BYU was playing in another conference, the officiating was quite different. With those officials, I think ANY Big XII team would have had every starter fouled out by halftime because they called a lot of what I considered minor, and questionable, fouls. Coming to watch the Big XII was a huge difference. There's a lot more "let the guys play" attitude here. For what it's worth, I think that helps the Big XII teams because the NCAA Tournament officials seem to call things that way too.
But every time that Milan or Jefferson did have the ball, the defender would two had shove and grab them without a call. It limited their ability to get to their spots. Iowa State was not allowed to play that same defense or BYU wouldn't have been able to drive the paint at-will either. The officials weren't perfect, but they were not the reason for the foul differential. BYU's guys could drive the paint pretty much at will and distribute or attempt a paint shot which tends to result in more fouls. Conversely, other than Momcilovic or Jeffereson backing down their defender, not much of our offense was downhill.
Solid effort by the players. But we gave up 96 points to BYU and there's maybe, maybe a 10% chance we win. With Gilbert and Lipsey out, our best chance of winning was a game in the 70's.
BYU was getting away with a lot of hand checking, they are just a poor matchup for ISU and many other teams. They have decent bigs that rebound well, and then have about 5 players that can make a 3 point shot. I really wish we had contested the corner 3 more, as they were making living off that shot, when our guy would close out on the ball they would chock it into the corner and they hit it well. We needed to try something different of defense, zone or less doubling to see if we could make them adjust and slow down their shooting. But every time that Milan or Jefferson did have the ball, the defender would two had shove and grab them without a call. A stinker from Houston might still get them a win, but a stinker from BYU definitely will not.Houston is overdue for a stinker. But BYU is also overdue for a stinker. Should be a good matchup.
Lipsey is great on the ball and trapping, but he is all world at playing angles off the ball that helps him get steals. He assesses the situations so well and knows where the likely outlets are in any scenario.BYU was able to drive the paint because they have really good players, a great offensive concept AND our defense was minus its 2 best on-ball/trapping defenders Lipsey & Gilbert. Guys like Jones, Momcilovic, Jefferson & Jackson are very average on-ball defenders. So stopping their penetration was going to be near impossible. Especially with some off our defensive principles of giving drivers lanes along the baseline and from the wing.
I agree Big12 officials are allowing hand checks and forearm shivers to play defense. We saw Cincinnati defenders do that all night. But I'm a big believer that our trapping defense and very handsy defense benefit from the refs allowing physical play.
Tbf he did not concede that. He cited it would be different. And cited two games BYU won. This seems rather aggressive considering he is conceding BYU probably would have lost if Lipsey had played.
Was that really necessary?Houston is going to kick your team's a$$. Lipsey is a lot more than turnover stats you polygamist puke. Have a nice weekend.
Doesnt that fall on our defense a little or are they missing decently open 3 pointers? I also think we are their super bowl a bit.And just like that, when they don't hit threes, they get their asses kicked.
Houston isn't exactly shooting lights out, and they put up 41.
I think if Lipsey doesn't get hurt, we'd be playing right now.
I'll give Houston some credit, but BYU had more than just an above average shooting game against us. I think with a healthier Lipsey, we beat them, even with them shooting as hot as they did.Doesnt that fall on our defense a little or are they missing decently open 3 pointers? I also think we are their super bowl a bit.
