I think PG is the most important position on the floor. (in the college game) Kinda like the QB is the most important position on the field.
I'd rather have a stud PG than a stud center.
You saw where that got us last year right? I'm not saying point guard isnt extremely important but I would have to say that having someone who is good in the post is just as important. We could not protect the basket and stop anyone down low last year at all.

It's an issue, but I actually thought Scott did ok handling the ball. He's no DG.

It is also a concern that it takes him away from shooting.

We'll work on it. Its not something that will be solved by just saying McGee or Allen should do it. nobody freak out please.

my thoughts exactly. Scotty did fine, but had no open shots that he got last year from working off the ball. Hopefully we get this sorted out in the next few games.

Jon Scheyer wasn't a PG when Duke won. Obviously they had more talent than we do but it shows you don't need a pure PG to be successful. You need a facilitator.

When we get Coach K as our head coach and 5 star recruits I won't worry so much about our lack of a true PG.

I hear what you are saying and I've been saying the same thing all off season. I'm just hoping we have a guy that can do what Scheyer did.

I actually liked when White brought the ball up. he is so smooth with everything he does. Could get 5 or 6 more points a game if he wouldnt miss free throws. One thing is for sure though, Scotty looked awful at point. the other players were pointing him in directions and pushing him out of the way. he looked so out of place. Also agree that I wanted to see more Sledge.

I'm glad you can make that observation after one exhibition game.

I don't think it is based on one game. I think it is based on the fact that Scotty is the current starting PG, and we've watched him for a few years and know that for as good of a player as he is he is not a PG.

We really don't know this though. Scotty barely even played PG the last two years, especially last year.

A center is obviously important, but the great teams have a great PG. IMO Tinsley was more valuable than Fizer.
As far as last year, with all due respect to DG, he wasn't a "stud" PG. Although he did have a really nice senior year.

I'd say that rebounding is a bigger concern to me than the point guard situation after the exhibition game. They point guard situation will work itself out I think, as we have many guys who can handle the ball (even if not as well as DG) but rebounding may need some work.

Speaking of which, where was Railey today? Just curious.

Railey is suspended for the first 3 games of the season. I think it was team rules or something.

Just FYI rebounding was 34-28 in favor of us. Probably not as good as we would like, but could be worse.

I posted this in the gameday thread, but I really like Sledge. For the limited time in there I thought he looked good. He is quick, explosive in his drives and getting to the rim, and he also looks like he can make some creative passes.

It does suck that we have so many 2s and 3s that we can't keep them off the court to put a true PG on the floor, but that is a good problem to have.

Wasn't it just last year that we were super worried about having no size and no ability to rebound? Now we have a ton of size compared to last year (White, Gibson, Booker, Babb, Ejim at the 3 instead of the 4). That will help against the better competition we face, which is where we struggled last year.

Anyone know how bad Chris allen's hip pointer is? Will he be back close to 100% for our first game?

No but we have seen him consistently get trapped, turnover the ball, and make bad passes in the little time he has the ball in his hands.

With that said, he is a fantastic catch and shoot guy.

Those who say it's clearly a problem after one exhibition game. We don't need some stud PG this year. We don't need DG on this team to be successful. Just someone who doesn't turn the ball over and can get the ball to our shooters. There is still plenty of time to find someone who will do that.

Admitting that we have a problem or problems doesn't automatically equate to panicking. Problems are something that most teams have, and they don't necessarily preclude you from having a good season. Problems are really only problems if you can't overcome them, and we certainly don't have the answer to that yet.

Right now, our glaring problem is that we lack a talented, experienced, true PG. We may either have one that emerges this season, or we are able to overcome it with Royce and PG by committee.

The best thing that could happen, IMO is that Sledge could grow into the role and mature fast.

Well, with all this hand-wringing over our lack of point guard play maybe it's a good thing our non-conference schedule is so weak.

We won the Big 8 tournament and went to the NCAA tournament twice without a great point guard. Remember J.C. Holloway? I liked J.C. but we have 2 or 3 players that can play the position better than him. Give it time.

Easy there Judge. Don't you know that every PG thread devolves into J. C. Holloway bashing?

He was only an integral part of one of the best ISU teams to ever take the floor.

White playing the point was interesting to watch. Beyond that I thought our offense was actually the most fluid when we had Bubu in there manning the point. I might be eating my words about Bubu....if Sledge doesn't progress quickly he may have to play significant minutes, because having Scotty play the point just doesn't look to be the answer IMO.
