I copied this from the Oklahoma State board. This was posted by a long time fan and a friend of mine. Just thought you might want to read his take. It is sad. I agree with most of what he is saying. The posters web name is Oberebo.
A majority of my friends call me old school and an old buddy-duddy or less moderate names that I will not post on this board. The NIL and the. portal will allow Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State and 1 0r 2 others to totally dominate wrestling.I believe many marginal teams will just eliminate wrestling as they will not be able to compete. I actually detest the idea that we will have to pay wrestlers to come to Stillwater. I am rapidly losing my enthusiasm for the sport and I know many will say "well he is old and can not grasp new ideas" and that it is a young man's sport. Our fan base is older than most and time will change that and younger fans will be satisfied and enthused over what will become pro wrestling.
This may be my last post. I have been a fan of OK State wrestling since 1960 when I saw my first wrestling match which was bedlam.I think it is time for me to find other interests. I am not mad or embittered but only feeling a sense of loss. Many class posters on this board that I will miss. The new realities in wrestling I will not.

Those 3 schools you listed have won the last 15 straight NCAA championships. If that's not already domination, then what is it? What exactly are we trying to preserve here?

This.

It doesn’t really change anything. The same schools that have dominated in recent history will continue to dominate.

I think where it is going to hurt is when those 3 have holes, they might have to deal with that and go recruit a high school kid to fill that spot later. Now, they go to Jon Jon Millner of App State, Bernie Truax of Cal Poly, etc and immediately fill that spot. Keeping the Cal Poly and App State schools from dropping wrestling is important to the sport, but how long before they say it isn't worth it if all the good ones that they develop leave?

There's still the same number of team spots and scholarships to go around. Those lower teams that lose good, late- developing wrestlers can use the portal to fill those spots with more highly touted guys that didn't pan out at bigger schools. The portal gives exactly as often as it takes.

Nagao was 69 on High School Big board and at Minnesota
Olejnik was NR and at Southern or Northern Illinois
Truax was NR and at Cal Poly
Dean was 74 and at Cornell a couple years ago and at PSU now
Davison was 49 and at Northwestern and now going to Michigan next year

Cal Poly isn't replacing a Truax in the portal. Good for Truax, if he is getting well into the 6 figures, but Cal Poly isn't getting anyone close to his talent for little or no NIL money in the portal

Same with Olejnik at Northern Illinois. Northern Illinois can't afford anyone in the portal that is on the same level as Olejnik.

Not many probably offered Truax or Olejnik much of a scholarship out of high school

I do understand that many of these are Grad transfer and maybe once the extra Covid years end that it may not be as bad.

I do hope the NCAA limits the number of transfers by an under graduate without a penalty. They will probably start throwing exemptions around like crazy then.

Yes, mobility is bad. Students should not have options for better situations.

I agree. If anything I think the point to be made is that now it just becomes an arms race between the 3. Those top tier kids are gonna benefit greatly as it turns into bidding wars between those 3 for their services.

That has nothing to do with Gable and you know it.
Oh, it has something to do with Gable. Arms races require, well, arms. I fully expect wrestling to become even more top heavy. I seem to recall even Gable himself lamenting Iowa's dominance, worrying that it would decrease interest in the sport. I believe it did. Other schools decided since they couldn't compete, why bother to compete.

No, surely not. But they can get decent wrestlers to replace them. Like our basketball team - we lose a Tyrese Hunter to Texas. So we poach someone from a mid-major. Likewise, Eli King didn't get playing time, so he's transferring down a level. I don't see how wrestling is different. The Cal Polys will have to adapt to do similar things.
