The OT thread about names got me thinking. What are your nicknames, do you like them, do you take them into account when naming your kids?

Everyone I know calls me King, its my last name, I like it.

As far as kids, if our next one is a girl, we are going to name her Caitlyn. I REALLY hope she doesn't decide she wants to be called Kate or Lyn. I know plenty of people with those names that I am friends with, I just don't like them as names for my kid. Its not enough to stop us from naming her that, but I may grumble softly to myself if people start calling her that.

I was very picky about names for our kids. I like Biblical names and I was very concerned about nicknames that they might end up with. I don't like too much aliteration and I wanted to make sure that our kids didn't end up known by their middle names; I am and I am constantly having to correct and/or explain it.

I have a nickname that my family and hubby use (shortened from my given name) I cringe when others outside the family pick up on it and try to use it. Okay for family, not so much for others. Then there is an even shorter version that is okay for friends to use.

Ruke. It's the first letter of my last name put on for the first letter of my first name. A kid I played baseball with legitimately mixed up the two and it just kind of stuck and spread.

I have tried to get my wife to call me "Hunk" or "Stud" but she just giggles when I mention it....

My name doesn't really "shorten", per se...although with an alternate spelling it could be a shortened version of a longer name.

But...

In high school: Sawed off (as in shotgun). Short of stature, mean temper (red hair...go figure).

Now? KC (again, go figure!)

I didn't start going by Will until high school so I prefer that my parents and and extended family use William because that's what I'm used to. I also prefer that because my cousin's Fiance's name is Will so it makes things easier. My cousin has called me Wills for as long as I can remember. My friends all call me Will, and that's how I introduce myself, which has lead to some puzzled looks in Germany (In German "will" means want).

As for when I have kids, I'll probably try to use names that have nicknames so that they can decide what they want to be called, but I'll probably use their given names or pet names.

Just a boring old shortened version of my last name. Snedds. Had it for years, what I'm known by at work also.

Chip or chipper to the family. Yes, from Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. Two other nicknames from that: my dad was Flash (the wonder dog) and my next younger brother is Zip.

During a Wednesday night church group meeting, we were asked (as a random time-waster) to come up with a word that best described ourselves and started with the same letter as our first names. Unfortunately, I didn't hear the part about said word describing our personalities, so when it came to be my turn and I hadn't thought of anything, I used the first word that popped into my head...........and that's how my nickname "Killer Keith" was born. The class had a good long laughfest over that one. I later found out, in a strange bit of coincidence, my grandpa's nickname while on the high school football team was "Killer Carl"...so the name stuck and is occasionally still used today.

The only nickname I really have from anyone other than my husband is just Ang or Angie. Nothing attached to it.

We call our daughter "Pickle." She loves it, and it suits her. Her first birthday party had a pickle theme - but I do not encourage you to google the words "pickle party" for theme ideas without thinking it through first.

I would imagine the same goes for someone nicknamed Lemon.

Ive had a bunch of nicknames. The ones that have stuck are Bos and D. Either I am fine with.

Good thinking, we will avoid using that for the new baby.

had many nicknames until my freshman year in college when my coach at ISU gave me a very simple nickname that has stuck ever since (20+ years). It just fit.

Dude, to whom am I married? Of course that was a hilarious joke to pull on me once.
