I think we might be able to take into account the possibility that Jacobson, Young or Conditt could develop their three point shooting enough to make a bigger lineup possible. I don't think our offense relies as much on 4 guards as much as it relies on 4 perimeter threats.

Jacobson showed early that his three point shot was reasonably good (I think it has tailed off as of late to 32.6% for the year). Young is 5 for 23 for his career, but the fact that he shot 19 last year tells me that Coach Prohm believes he can make that shot. Conditt shot 6-13 from deep in high school, and it's entirely possible that he has that ability. If two of those guys can find a way to become a legitimate threat out there, it seems like our ability to go big will be greatly enhanced. Imagine a lineup with Conditt and Lard playing together with three guards...

I do agree to a point on the offensive end, it's defense where you need the right guy at the 4 spot. Jacobson has the offensive ability to play at the 4 where he can space the floor or go inside, but can he guard on the perimeter? I do think running MJ at the 4 spot occasionally through the game with one of our other bigs at the 5 would be an interesting experiment to try. I think we would have tried something like that this season had Young not gotten hurt.

If Prohm gets Nadonly, I could see him being an instant contributor, similar to Haliburton, and maybe more so than Jackson or Leech. Probably not a starter, but he's got the length and athleticism to play multiple spots. Ideally, he's willing and able to be a very good defender.

FWIW, I have this years basketball poster in my cube at work and it has Solomon, Wigginton, Babb, Shayok, and Jacobson as the only 5 on the poster. Could just be coincidence, but that would've been a solid starting 5 with Prohm knowing well before they did their media stuff that Lard would be suspended to start the season. May be a dumb thought process on my part, but reading between the lines, 3 guards and 2 bigs might've been what he was planning to use this year before all the early season turmoil.

I would think that has more to do with those players being the "vets" and not including freshman on the early poster. I am firmly in the Prohm wants to play 4 G/W and 1 big.
THT was going to be in the starting lineup from the day he signed due to talent and future recruiting.
There is a debate on if Young, or Lard, Jacobson would have started right away. Lard was probably always going to start on the bench to be integrated. being away from the team all summer.

I would have been very curious if a healthy Young would have lost his starting spot.

History says no -- Prohm sticks to his guys, unless Jacobson was head-and-shoulders better.

I think Prohm's shown he's very hesitant to bring freshman into the fold, so while THT probably would've started eventually, I don't think he would've started at the beginning of the season without all the attrition. Wigginton was an outlier last year because we had nothing coming back and no quality transfers with experience. Look how long he kept Holden starting the year before despite it being obvious he wasn't cutting it.

Also, you disagreed with another post. Despite what Prohm wants to do, you don't think the roster/talent next year dictates we play 2 bigs most of the time? You really think if Conditt, Lard, Solomon, and Jacobson are all only averaging 10 min a night or, more likely, 1 is playing 25 min, 1 is playing 15 min, and the other 2 get mop up minutes and/or ride the bench all year that there won't be some chemistry issues? If you're fine with 1 or 2 of those guys transferring out, then I can see your position, but if you want to keep everyone content, there's gotta be more minutes to go around as all 4 have shown they are worthy of minutes at this level, especially with another year of development.

I don't think Horton Tucker is gonna be back to be honest. A lot of NBA Draft publications have him going in the first round. Doubtful he passes up that opportunity at guaranteed money.

Jeeze. Didn't think my lineup would be so hated, especially with lots of people then stating how they see value in the 2 bigs.

I think Lard & Conditt have the highest ceiling of our 4 bigs. Jacobson's jumpshot is nice to have, but I guess i see him slightly overmatched physically in some of the Big 12 play.

I guess I don't know much about Nixon, but given his size, I don't see him starting over a bigger Haliburton or a more explosive Wigginton.

I don't see how Wiggs has improved his NBA stock any higher than last year so I would be surprised if he enters the draft. The injury set him back and he has so much to gain by coming back and taking the lead on this team next year. As for a PG either he has to really work on playing more disciplined but I don't see why Haliburton couldn't give it a try either as he has been a very good passer this season and takes care of the ball and picks his spots to shoot. I think we'll have to go back to a more traditional 2 bigs 3 guards look with the personnel we potentially have coming back.

Would not be shocked if Lewis transfers. I think the kid has potential but just hasn't worked out here to get him the minutes and volume of shots he needs to be a threat offensively. The wild card is the grad transfer market. If a good guard or wing player becomes available that makes sense to bring in then that could change things too.

This freshman class we have could be special if they continue to grow and develop. If Conditt and Haliburton add some muscle, THT does the Niang offseason and trims up a bit to be more agile, and Griffin continues to develop we should be in great shape to replace Shayok's contributions. Just the extra minutes they got this season because of the suspensions and injuries should help a lot for next season too.

This thread is for fun speculation, but there is likely to be significant turnover in the roster before next season. Here are the numbers historically in the Prohm era...

2015-2016
---
(3) Nader, McKay, Niang graduate
(4) Ashton, Cooke, Noskowiak, Ernst transfer
---
(3) Long, Lard, Young from high school
(1) Jackson from JUCO
(3) Bowie, Holden, Kasongo from transfers
---
= net of seven roster spot turn over

2016-2017
---
(6) Morris, Mitrou-Long, Thomas, Bowie, Burton, and Holden graduate
(2) Kasongo, Carter transfer
---
(2) Wigginton, Lewis from high school
(5) Beverly, Shayok, Brase, Talley, Jacobson from transfers
---
= net of eight roster spots turn over (one left open)

2017-2018
---
(3) Jackson, Beverly, Brase graduate
(1) Long transfers
---
(4) Haliburton, Horton-Tucker, Griffin, Conditt IV from high school
(1) Nixon from transfer
---
= net of five roster spots turn over

* * *

I think people underestimate the rebuild job Prohm had for him after that first year (the second year being a bonus because we did not expect Monté or Naz back). He turned over 15 roster slots in only two years and has rebuilt a competitive program for us.

We already know three spots are going to turn over next season with graduations (alas, farewell to Shayok, Weiler-Babb, and Talley). Three freshmen replace them.

Wigginton, Horton-Tucker, and Haliburton have been discussed as NBA prospects. Prohm is sure recruiting like he knows we are going to lose at least one of them.

I doubt Nixon or Jacobson are going anywhere. I doubt Solomon is going anywhere before next season, though his health is certainly a question mark.

Lard has been in the doghouse in the past, though seems better nowk, but who knows. Lewis and Griffin have been speculated about as transfer candidates. I have even heard Conditt, too, though I consider that much less likely than the other two guys.

That gives you 2/13 roster spots where we are really, 100% sure about them.

History says we will end up with probably more like 4-6 spots turning over, not only three.

Agreed, Conditt and Lard are mobile enough that we could still move the ball like Prohm likes and still have good threats from the outside.

Way up there
Anderson is interesting to me, he has a lot of experience ahead of him but he's an ideal stretch 4 and while he is not a threat off the dribble like Burton or THT , he could be a good enough shooter to still fit in at the 4 in Prohms 4-1 offense. I'd be really surprised if he earned PT next season but he does bring a skill set that none of the other bigs do.

The offseason lineup threads around here are going to be out of control this summer. I'm not sure I can remember us bringing back so many guys that played and yet still have so many question marks. It's going to be interesting.

Wigginton starting as a freshman isn't an outlier when discussing THT. Both were top 60 recruits and players with their talent and offers often get a starting position.

I don't think the roster next year dictates you play 2 bigs, especially if THT and LW return. If they leave Prohm is actively looking at guards to replace them either prep, JuCo or transfer. Prohm wants to spread the floor with shooters and Jacobson, Lard, Young or Conditt haven't shown that yet. None of the 4 bigs have shown you can run an offense through them consistently yet either. No offense I just don't think Prohm's system is going to change from the past 4 years 1 post to 2 in one year. We will see.

Last year, the first year of Prohm’s construction, he was committed to two posts so much that rather than adding more guards or wings that could help, he grabbed bottom-barrel forwards to facilitate having two posts.

I’m sure that disaster led to some introspection, and perhaps Prohm changed. I think Prohm is flexible to his roster.

Not trying to pick a fight at all, but you still haven't answered my question RE team chemistry. If all 4 come back and are healthy, you don't think it will create a chemistry issue if they're not getting minutes? Also, I think it's reasonable to assume Prohm's focus on guards is because he has 4 bigs coming back and Anderson signed, so he feels he has more than enough size.
