New Coordinators?

As for DC, I like John Chavis. But I really think Chizik should model himself after Saban. Saban is truly the CEO of his program (heck he has even been on the cover of Forbes) and he typically hires a top young guy to be his DC. But make no mistake, Saban is very hands-on with the teaching and coaching on the defensive side of the ball (specifically with the DBs).

Totally agree about Saban. You know as well as I do even though Kevin Steele is the "defensive coordinator" that Saban does most of the work for that defense. Steele is basically there to tie up loose ends and recruit IMO. I'd love to see Gene take this model and from the sounds of things that's a possibility.

Re: Change in coordinators - Recruiting Impacts

One thing you could say is that until we hire new coordinators, recruits won't know for sure what type of system they will be playing in at ISU. Also, any connections that Peterson and Raney had are now lost. So there's two possible reasons that recruiting could be negatively impacted. Hopefully the net impact will be very positive, but we don't know who the new coordinators are yet.

Re: Change in coordinators - Recruiting Impacts

By reading a lot of the defensive recruits they like ISU because of the defense we run. However, I don't think by getting rid of our d-backs coach it is going to change anything because I'm sure he ran a defense to what chizik wanted so in that aspect I don't really know...qb situation could be a little different, but i'm sure they have/will be in contact with Chizik regarding this

Chizik is on the road recuriting so he has or is going to visit recruits that had contact with the coaches that were let go, one would think.

Steele has some good credentials of his own I'm pretty sure he is running the D. Most good head coaches let their assistants coach. If they don't they have a lot of turnover and don't last to long due to burnout.

Coaching Changes(Pure Speculation)

I think that the coaching dismissals at ISU have more to do with recruiting than they do with on the field coaching. McFarland is moving to Asst. Head coach which brings similar money and allows him to focus on the O-Line. The O-line coach spends almost 1/2 of practice time away from the QB and other skill guys It is difficult to run a complex offense in that situation. I know Loney did it but at the same time ISU's passing game was less complex when he was here. Bolt's move might have something to do with his health issues. I don't think the guy forgot how to coach. I would like to see Todd Fitch come back to ISU. He has done an excellent job at Eastern Carolina. Although he has seen how difficult it is to recruit at ISU and may not want to take the chance. ISU has been a launching pad for some great coaches. A graveyard for others. Interesting times ahead for GC and the boys.

My dream choices would be either Al Borges or Tony Franklin for OC and John Chavis for DC. Those are guys with a lot of years of experience as coordinators in the SEC.

If the rumors are true that Chizik intends to become the DC, I bet he hires a younger co-coordinator to assist him. That would free up some money to throw at a big-time OC.

You would be wrong...Saban always has a DC but, make no mistake, the defense on the field (players and scheme) is Nick Saban's.

By the way, if you look at Saban's record...at LSU in particular...you will find tremendous turnover in his staff. He has had the same sort of thing in his short tenure at Alabama (Applewhite being an example). CONTINUITY OF STAFF IS WAY OVER-RATED...AS LONG AS THE GUY AT THE TOP IS THE SAME!

Chizik is not going to become the DC in name...he will hire someone to take the position. My only point is that you can be the CEO of the program and still be intimately involved on the side of the ball that you made your reputation on...Saban is a great example of this being done.

Where we really need a strong hire is at OC.

I apologize if this has been mentioned, but I heard Deace mention yesterday on Miller's show that Chizik should name himself DC. Hard not to argue with that point, were is he going to find a DC that was as good as Chizik was Texas?

I think his defense at Auburn was even better. They went something like 8 straight games without allowing a TD. If he can get the players, he can undoubtedly coach them to play some D.

Todd Fitch FORMER ISU QB coach? He had a great relationship with AA and is a current Coordinator who is a good recruiter. It would be a pay increase for him.

Fitch will not be an option. He was the only coached retained by Chizik when he took over as head coach. Fitch later left less than a month into Chizik's tenure and Petersen was hired.

Hey, I hear Charlie Weis is going to get the boot at ND...what about him as OC?? How do you think Chizik would handle all of the profanity that Weis utters nearly non-stop?? I saw Weis cuss at his young son on the sideline during a ND game earlier this year.

I dislike Iowa as much as the next Clone fan (or more) but how is Norm Parker not on that list? I think it is more of a potential hiring list as opposed to actuallly rating the top talent. Norm has had some pretty stout defenses.

With all the talk of Charlie Weis possibly losing his job at ND, there may be a few other people fired along with him. What about a guy like Michael Haywood, the OC at Notre Dame right now. He coached at Texas in 2003-2004. This, I know, was a year before Chizik started coaching at Texas, so they don't have ties together.

Fitch left for an OC job and has done a great job Chizik can't afford to be as unforgiving as fans. If he is the best candidate and interested I have no doubt that Chizik would hire him.

Short tenure you just described Saben's head coaching career.
