So, with Chizik possibly taking over DC, does that mean we have more money to spend on an OC that would have otherwise been out of our league?

Somewhat... mind you we still have Bolt and MacFarland on the payroll. But, ofcourse it liquidates some cash by us not having to fill a DC role. I think its a good situation, and the players want Chiz to take over the D

Good point about the cash on both sides.

But from my seat, it may not be as much about the money if Gene is the DC and needs a firm OC - but instead - the power. As noted, if Gene is running the defense, he would need an OC that would hold all the keys on offense. A person may be inclined to take less cash for that power. Not all guys are for that, but some.

depends who we look at, but I think that its the best situation, someone is going to get full responsibility for this Offense that HAS some potential. With a good line coach to boot. IMO this is the best way we can do it. And from what im seeing and hearing, this is what is likely at the moment.

I have no personal knowledge of the situation, but I would be surprised is Chizik becomes the DC. When Chizik was hired one of the things Pollard talked about was that he wanted a CEO-style coach. I took that as someone who would work on high-level things and let his coordinators do the work, rather than micromanaging them or being one of them.

A few musings:

I find all of the Applewhite talk interesting. He was the OC at Rice in 2006 and then went to be Saban's OC at Bama in 2007. He left Bama after one year to be the RB coach at UT. A very odd move in light of the prestige and autonomy he had at a school like Bama and with a defensive oriented coach like Saban (he is pretty hands-off with his OC). Either Saban realized he was not ready to be an OC in a BCS conference or he realized it. I'm not sure one season as the RB coach for UT would have changed that.

I think Tony Franklin might be a good choice. He got a raw deal at Auburn this year.

As for DC, I like John Chavis. But I really think Chizik should model himself after Saban. Saban is truly the CEO of his program (heck he has even been on the cover of Forbes) and he typically hires a top young guy to be his DC. But make no mistake, Saban is very hands-on with the teaching and coaching on the defensive side of the ball (specifically with the DBs).

I think a 5-19 record over two seasons could substantially change a guy's perspective.

Chizik is one of the top defensive minds in college football. There are few that can do a better job than him at coaching it. No other coach will do what he want on D so for that reason he will call the D. You could see at time Bolt and Chizik have heated talks about what to do on the sidelines, IMO he wants total game control of the D. He would be smart to bring in an up and coming D coach to help him with the little things on D. McFarland had OC and DII head coaching experence, so experence doesnt equal success. A former DI HC would be nice as OC, but someone that is organized, calls the right plays at the right time, and runs the style Chizik wants is who he will hire.

:skeptical:Chizik is the top defensive mind in college football and few can do a better job than him coacing it? You said it. Where was it imparted to his defensive coaches the past two years? In my opinion, I do not think Chizik is a top defensive mind. Let's hope he hires the right guy. So far, I'm not impressed.

Apparently you havent seen Chizik's product at Auburn and Texas. Or listened to the guy talk about defense.

his second year defense here wasnt good, but not everything is in place just yet

He was trying to be CEO and let his guys do what they do and it didnt work. Put that with Bolt and Chizik having different things they want to do on D and you have a problem. At different times during games you could see them having heated talks about what to do. IMO Chizik made these 2 hires because he knew the two of them, felt they would do what he wanted, and he felt comfortable with them on his staff. Chizik could get a BCS DC job in hours if he left ISU. Before taking the job at ISU he was one of the top DCs in college FB.

Todd Fitch FORMER ISU QB coach? He had a great relationship with AA and is a current Coordinator who is a good recruiter. It would be a pay increase for him.
