I was visiting my dad today and he was watching an A&E marathon of "Criminal Minds.". They showed an episode where a theatre was having a special screening of "The Blob." An arsonist chained all of the doors and the. Set the theatre on fire, killing 32 people inside. My dad and I just looked at each other in disbelief.

I went to DKR in Ames last night and they had 2 cops guard the door to the theater. Sad it has to come down to this to ensure the audience can watch the movie safely.

Anybody watch the initial court hearing just now? They were allowed one camera in the court room that froze a lot, but often froze on the *******. I hadn't seen an updated view of him before this.. hair dyed red and yellow as if to be the joker with the wrong hair color? It's been said that he was a huge Dark Knight fan and that the joker was his motivation, but I really hope we don't see a huge anti movie movement out of this. It's not the movies or the video games. It's a combination of the parents not telling their child that this is incorrect and the child already having something wrong in the first place.

Anyway, they brought up the fact that he often had a small range of emotion and that the defense will use this to plead insanity. How in the world can you plead insanity when this crime was pre meditated and in planning for months?

If Batman weren't around this kid would have planned it around something else. If someone wants to do something like this their motivation stems from them having extreme mental issues. I get that a lawyer is needed for this kid and the guy should be paid handsomely to just sit there and do nothing.

Normally I'd agree, but in this case the guy's in his mid 20s and lead a normal, non traumatic childhood. He seemed like a normal (nerdy) kid. I'm sure he started changing in college sometime or something happened to him. I don't think in this case the parents are to blame.

You can plead insanity if you can show the guy is out of his mind. Just because you're insane doesn't mean you don't know how to plan things out. That's ******* ridiculous. He could legitimately think he's the Joker or something, or someone like the Joker. I don't know the terms of insanity vs. death penalty, but it might not even matter in this case. I think what matters more is the fact he planned it out. Even if he's completely out of his mind, he planned it out and that's what matters more.

Eh, it's not a new idea at all. There was a comic in the mid 80s (might have been Batman) where they go into the theater and shoot a bunch of people.

It wasn't a question on whether it's a new idea or not. It was a question of decency. I would've thought that someone at A&E would have pulled the plug on that one and put another in it's place.

Meant to post on Monday. I saw the court hearing on Monday when it was on. It was so surreal, he looked like he is currently on every drug known to man.

I saw an article this morning that stated the police yesterday found a package he sent to a psychiatrist on campus he'd seen a few times in the recent past. It was filled with detailed plans for how he was going to carry out this massacre, and even "drawings of stick figures with guns shooting each other". Not that this is a big story, until you hear that he mailed the package to the psychiatrist early enough that it arrived on July 12.

July 12? Wow. Talk about "dead letter office". That doctor had better hope that Holmes' file doesn't contain any references to violent behavior, because he's going to get LOTS of questions now about "why didn't you open that package?" Of course, since it WAS found down in the mailroom instead of up in the Dr's office, the Dr. probably wasn't at fault here. Some idiot in the mailroom misplaced the package & a chance to avoid the massacre was missed.

Oh yeah.....link?

When they do their marathons, it's usually episodes that are back-to-back on a DVD. They don't put much thought into it.

I noticed that after buying the DVDs.

Spared Death Penalty? This guy deserves to die.

He could be spared the death penalty. This only means that the court has accepted that his lawyers can use it as a defense, not that he's actually been found not guilty by reason of insanity. His lawyers still need to prove it.

Murdering twelve people should be exclusion from the opportunity to become a burden of the state. He's dead to rights, just flip the switch and call it a day.
