What theshadow said. But there's more to it than just that because very few wrestlers are on a full scholarship. If you're going to end up having to pay off loans anyways, stuff like non-athletic aid and desire to compete for a specific school plays heavily into it. When a guy grows up wanting to be a Hawkeye, .3 of a scholarship isn't going to change their mind. And if a guy wants to wrestle for Cael Sanderson, half a schollie isn't going to sway their decision. It isn't like football where everybody gets a full ride and only coaching & playing time matter. There are really talented wrestlers going to Penn State, Iowa, Minnesota, Cornell, Ohio State, and other schools right now knowing they'll be riding the bench possibly their whole careers.
And also, to be clear, Iowa State is a "have', not a "have not", in wrestling. We benefit greatly from having a strong tradition, and the CWC brings in talented senior level wrestlers that help in getting the best out of our guys. We just don't have all the advantages that the very top level schools do. I'm struggling to find a good comparison for a football team that sits where we do as a wrestling team. But maybe a Michigan State or a Clemson. They are top schools that have resources and can bring in good recruits on their own merits. But they aren't at the very tip of the mountain and need luck and excellent coaching to take them to the peak.
Like I posted earlier. Iowa State has the support and staff to turn any given recruit into a national champion. Our challenge is just getting enough of them on campus.
