Just got back from a business trip and had the good fortune to hear J Walt on the Murph and Andy show. I didn't realize that he tweeted this a few hours ago:

"Some in Iowa media practically cheering for the Big 12 to blow up. IA HS kids get opportunity in 2 BCS conferences. You want that to change?"

Pretty big confirmation of our concerns of the local media and accusation of their loyalties. In the interview, he even commented how some of the media are uofi fans at heart and cheer against ISU.

That darn old DSM. Eve since Gannett bought them, they have been down on us. And now all the OWH (Ames tribune carrier) cares about is Hawk footrball this, Hawk football that. Guess, we are just going to have to win the Iowa game this year.

Very evident that Garman loves all of this. The guy is a petty goat. Most uniformed Sports Director and Radio host in the country.

Murph made that comment.

The best was Andy's rant on why ISU potentially not being in a BCS conf was a terrible thing for the entire state. And J-Walt replied that he couldnt have said it any better.

Great job by Jon.

Its sad how many Iowans are too dumb to realize how big of a deal it is for the State of Iowa to have 2 BCS-level universities in a state of its size. Its absolutely great for the economy, academics, and prestige of the state.

In saying this I realize the average Hawk fans has a high school education at best, and probably isn't able to understand this. But you would hope for more from the media, especially the sports media in this state, some of whom may not have jobs without two major Universities in the state and their ravenous fanbases.

I respect the effort you made here to politely elevate the average Hawk fan.

As far as the sports media jobs, I think you undersold it. What market would there really be around here without both universities? I don't see the whole state sitting breathlessly for Hawkeye radio like they do for Husker talk across the river.

Without both universities, I think most of the sports media around here would be unemployed. There just wouldn't really be anything to talk about.

Living in Eastern Iowa, I hear a lot from some (not all) Iowa fans who seem thrilled at the idea of ISU getting pushed down to the MWC or MAC. Rivalry aside, Iowa having two BCS schools with such a small population is huge for the state, from prestige to the bottom line of tax revenues. ISU not being in a big time conference would have a negative impact on the state as a whole, going far beyond who gets featured on ESPN.

"diving for loose balls" Marty. Looking at you.

Exactly! I don't know how this can possibly help his ratings. It used to be so much more fun and entertaining when he was attacking the Hawks. It was great radio. The hawk fans would call in and whine and fuel the fire. ISU fans just shake their heads and turn to 1460.

Most Hawkeye fans only understand simple math, so it's easy to figure out what they are thinking. Current Hawkeye fanbase + new Hawkeye fans fleeing the Cyclones = more Hawkeye fans. It's difficult for their thinking to get more complicated than that. They may be able to figure out this means more money for their AD, but that's pushing it.

its not just that there are 2 BCS schools, its that they are from different BCS conferences. Iowa is the only state that has a Big 12 and a Big 10 team.

Who is it that says many of the reporters that cover the Hawks are cheering/whatever the whole game in the press box in IC. After following some Hawk guys on Twitter, I can see that very easily, especially guys like Marc Morehouse, the Zabels, etc.

Not all of us. We turn it to NPR or the Bus. But not 1460 drive time. Terrible.

I'll be the opinion of dissent. Just because somebody in the media talks with excitement about the story - doesn't mean they gleefully await the Big XII's demise. There is excitement about a genuine topic. The 5000 plus posts in the Texas A&M thread aren't Cyclone fans wanting the Big 12 to dissolve - but about people following the story. The woe is me routine gets old.

Zabel . . an Iowa grad . . . did his dirty deed for decades in this state by giving lip service to ISU . . and foaming at the mouth for his beloved hawks.

That CULTURE is firmly entrenched in this weird state . . . and washes over to the rest of the media.

I used to live in Texas (before internet in the early 80s) . . . and would strain to listen to the ISU score/update on WHO . . . magically, after covering the hauks for all normal hour programming . . . they would power down the station (normally at 7:30 p.m.) conveniently before the Cyclone update. JERKS. I still hate their guts for that . . .
