is it time for us to leave the Big 12?

I wonder if we could just leave for football and still be in the conference for the other, non revenue generating sports.

That makes no sense at all. How would we make more money with MAC conference games than Big 12 games? Games against Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas are going to bring in a ton more money than games against Ohio, Central Michigan, and Northern Illinois.

I think the big thing here is are you just looking at football or are you looking across the athletics program. Many of our other programs are pretty competitive in the Big 12, so as a whole I think we are good.

With regards to football, I think we just need to be realistic. We are never going to compete for a conference football title. Ever. The resource gap is just too big. Sure, we were in it to win the North a couple times when the division was at about its lowest level ever. But even then, we weren't going to hang within 4 TDs in the title game. Just turn on the TV and watch a game at OU or UT or USC or OSU or Florida. Take a look at the facilities these schools have, take a look at the quality of athletes they have on the field. Take a look at the amount of national exposure they get. And the gap keeps getting bigger. UT is looking to expand to a 125k seat stadium.

If it makes anybody feel any better, Iowa isn't going to get there either. Sure, they have been in the fight for the Big 10 title, but that conference is down from its peak, and the hawks are still a long ways from being a national power.

We can be a 6, 7, or 8 win team in football consistantly and we can be very competitive in the rest of the sports. I think that is a realistic expectation, and I think playing at that level in the Big 12 would be a much better option than being a contender year in and year out in CUSA or the MAC. But if you expect to be in the hunt every couple years in football in this conference, you are setup for a lot of disappointment.

Because of this one game? You apparently are one of the ISU fans that makes this game your Superbowl...which explains why you're taking it so hard.

It isn't time for ISU to leave the Big 12...but it is time for you to leave the fanbase.

How can a hawk leave our clone fan base when said hawk was never a member of OUR Fanbase?????:biglaugh:

You think Colorado should do the same? They just got trounced by Toledo. At least we have been in good in basketball and look to be good again this year, plus WBB's and wrestling.....colorado has nothing positive to hang their hat on except football and they will be lucky to win more than 2 games this year.

Have you ever heard of revenue sharing? OU and TU give us LOTS of money for their bowl and TV appearances. We'd shrink without the Big XII.

If I were a mod I'd just kill this right now.

Maybe if I personally attack the OP (who is obviously a troll) I can get it shut down.

I'm with it. Ban me if you must, but OP needs the Mel Gibson at the end of Braveheart treatment. Rack him!

the day may not be too far ahead of us, fellas. The BOR wants ADs to be self funding sooner instead of later.
Yeah, and if we leave the Big 12, we're going under. Switching conferences would KILL the budget. How can you not understand that?

The Big 12 would have to FORCE us out before we leave. We need the Big 12 a lot more than it needs us right now.

I still have thoughts about the future formation of a Super Conference - where Texas / Ohio State / Florida, et al get tired of being required to take road trips to Ames, Bloomington and Fayettville, and split off to form a big-money super conf.

Then, Texas can schedule non-conf games in Sept with teams like Iowa State, to come into Memorial Stadium for a pay-out of 90,000 tickets vs 45,000 (Ames home games), and when they do go on the road, they play their conf games in super-power team stadiums.

I don't see that happening either. Playing conference games against teams like Iowa State and Baylor year in and year out is good for teams like Texas and Oklahoma because they're the next best thing to guaranteed wins. If TX and OU were in a "super conference," they'd run a higher risk of having losing seasons.

Dusty...could I please answer your question? It WOULD NOT BE BETTER IN THE MAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know that and you know that, but I'd like Mr. Fire and Rain to explain it to me since he's obviously thought it through so thoroughly.

let's be honest. We are never going to compete in this league, nor would we be a player in the Big 10. I think the MAC is made for us.

Are you one of those guys who have the license plates that read 23-3 or 15-13? No, it is not our super bowl!!

the cards are stacked against us. Small recruiting base, a budget dwarfed by the other schools. Im not demeaning any coach or AD weve had, just being a realist.

In Fry's first two years at Iowa, the Hawks lost Northwestern 58-6, lost to Nebraska 57-0, lost to Purdue 58-13, lost to Michigan State 41-0.

ISU plays one of its worse games ever with SIX turnovers and loses 35-3 in the second game of the first season of a brand new coach and you want to throw in the towel?

Suppose they are not required to play all the teams in the Super Conference; similar to today when the B12 & SEC not playing all teams - thus allowing for scheduling of more non-conf games to be played in their home stadiums.

Just wondering........"guaranteed wins" could still be possible with the formation of a Super Conference, but just guaranteed as home games.

BTW - if this does happen, I feel the NCAA must step in aand change the system to make it more equitable - perhaps doing stuff like reducing the # of scholarships; etc.
