Not sure Tyrese should have his jersey retired at ISU but the current standard doesn’t fit the state of college sports right now. Some of the players that took this program to levels never seen before still do not have their jerseys in the rafters. So if someone plays for ISU for less than two full seasons and is 2nd team all Big 12 his 2nd year, do you think his number should be retired?
It would be different if he would have been an all-american or something. He had a really good sophomore season but he did nothing in an ISU uniform that is deserving of his jersey being retired. We have a good basketball tradition with a lot of players who accomplished more at ISU than he did who don't have their jersey hanging. The only way he should be considered is if he ends up in the Hall of Fame. Let his NBA career play out more.Exactly. Tough as the game has changed. Would a transfer who was here a year and then got diploma while at ISU qualify? Etc.
Why would Lipsey get his number retired? At the very least shouldn't you be an all-american, multi-year 1st team all-conference, or conference POY. Even Fizer and Tinsley don't have theirs retired. Lipsey has had a great career but is he really more accomplished than someone like say Justus Thigpen or Dedric Willoughby? Set the bar high and keep it that way. We can put these guys in some kind of Ring of Honor.Professional success shouldn't factor into collegiate number retirements. Hali was at ISU for 2 years. I can't see his number being retired.
With that said, I would like to see Ejim and Niang jerseys retired. And eventually Lipsey
Nobody is in awe of the exclusive retired jersey club. What is the upside to having the bar set high. Why would Lipsey get his number retired? You should have accomplishments in an ISU uniform that distinguish you from others. I really don't care about him not graduating but he wasn't an all American, conference POY,.or anything like that while he was here. Accomplishments in an ISU uniform should make up 90% of the criteria. As I said earlier the only way he should get in is if he makes the HOF. I might consider it also if he won a league MVP or was multi year all-NBA. His NBA career is still young. If your're getting in because of mainly your accomplishments as a pro let his career play out first. Don't retire it because he's had a few really good years as a pro. From what I've seen of him so far he's on his way. I love his game and watching him play ball.Nobody is in awe of the exclusive retired jersey club. What is the upside to having the bar set high.
Lipsey is no lock but a big senior season could make it happen. First team all Big 12 and 3rd team all American would make me think he belongs.

I understand what you're saying and don't disagree. Whether it's fair or not the standard for getting your jersey retired has clearly changed based on the success we've had the last 20-25 years. I'm mean if Fred Hoiberg would have played from 2010-2014 instead of 91-95 he probably wouldn't even be up there. We have regularly had great players here the last few decades so I think the standard has changed. I know it has for me personally and I was alive to see almost all the guys on the list play. I get it that some people don't like it but what you accomplished at certain points in ISU history tend to be worth more. Barry Stevens wasn't better than Niang or Ejim but we know why Barry got his retired. He's arguably the guy that started Hilton Magic. You see the same types of things at other programs. Tyrese isn't even up there with Niang, Ejim, and Monte because he wasnt even in the same league as them in terms of accomplishments at ISU. #5 should have been hanging in the rafters for the last 20 years. I've always said that. Marcus was the best player that ever played in a Cyclone uniform. His junior year he was the most dominant power forward I've ever seen offensively in CBB except for Glenn Robinson at Purdue. That includes guys like Corliss Williamson at Arkansas. He could do things that even like Chris Webber couldnt. If Ejim/niang/morris are immediately retired after playing career this will die down. If all 3 of them somehow aren’t but also not Fizer, basically zero players ever will be…also Fizer was better than anybody retired, took us furthest and gave up millions to come back for junior year.
I agree with you. I don't think Haliburton's jersey should be retiredYou should have accomplishments in an ISU uniform that distinguish you from others. The Olympics certainly add to Hali's credentials but to me his post/non ISU career alone still isn't there. Hall of Fame or 4 or more all 1st or 2nd team all-NBA's and i have no issue with it. If he wins a regular season MVP I'll = that to 4 all-NBA teams.Imho this contradiction/dilemma was already resolved brilliantly by the Olympic banner for Tyrese…and I’m probably his biggest fan listening to or watching all his games.
Fizer not being retired makes 100% of them idiotic past or future. Love JP but hopefully next AD resolves that…it even tarnishes the honor for other guys. He was an absolute force.

Having an NBA starting point guard and NBA Champion + Olympic gold medal winner = marketing gold.
Pollard will bend the rules for Halliburton.
Just have one of the three girls from the shirtless 50 cent club video do his class work for him.I wouldn't be shocked if Tyrese followed David Montgomery's example and returned to finish his degree sometime down the road. He could easily get his BLS degree without actually having to be on campus.
Wharr their weigh in re: hanging his jersey in Hilton? From NYT The Morning news summary:
N.B.A.: Tyrese Haliburton’s dazzling performance led the Indiana Pacers to a 130-121 win and a 3-1 series lead over the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals. Even more impressive? His zero turnovers.
