Some Pacers fans are already taking about greatest Pacer ever if they win the championship this year. Probably a bit of a stretch due to the desperation for a championship.

In my opinion, its only a stretch because of duration. If he wins a championship and plays 4-5 more years at a an all star level for the Pacers (with no more championships), I'd say you could call him the greatest Pacer ever.

I'd rank him #2 all time in the NBA era behind Reggie only.

If you add in the ABA time (and 3 championships), that complicates it. George McGinnis and Mel Daniels would probably be ahead of him.

About the only comparable guy I've found with a retired number is Demar Derozan. He played 1 year at USC and lost in the 2nd round as a 10 seed. For the most part, other guys that have only played a year or two haven't had their numbers retired. Durant's number is retired but he won the Wooden Award.

I wouldn't be shocked if Tyrese followed David Montgomery's example and returned to finish his degree sometime down the road. He could easily get his BLS degree without actually having to be on campus.
Basketball might be a little harder due to schedule.

Davidson refused to retire Stephen Curry's number until he finished his degree. I love the fact that Tyrese was a Cyclone and reps for the Cyclones every chance he gets- but in my opinion you need to have graduated to attain that honor.

Retiring a jersey should be more based on a player's accomplishments while at ISU more than what they did in the NBA after they left IMO. Not saying that he isn't deserving but there are a few other more deserving players that need to be retired before he is considered. Niang being the first one I thought of, Monte and Ejim also are deserving and how we have never retired Fizer yet who was possibly the best player to ever play here is a damn shame too. In today's era where someone playing 4 years for the same school being rare the whole "didn't graduate" thing probably needs to be tossed from criteria if that is what is keeping some from being retired.

Nice research. that seems BONKERS that USC retired his number. He's third all time in scoring as a freshman in USC history. and its not like they retire everyone. They only have 7 retired jerseys.

its just missing out on some massive marketing opportunities. In this day and age, I think you gotta drop that requirement.

Don't the guys who leave early always promise their momma they'll finish their degree someday?

I'm in the camp that it should mostly be based on what you did as a player at Iowa State. I'm also a fan of a cooling off period so the jersey should only be retired 10 or more years after leaving Iowa State. I wasn't a fan of rushing to retire Hoiberg's. Too much of a chance of the Sanders/Hunter fiasco.

Twenty years ago the degree thing might have made sense, but a guy who leaves a year early because his coach tells him it is the right decision and he is making in his first contract more than most of us will in our lifetime has gotten what he should have from his ISU experience. Fizer only left early because he learned that his parent's house had burned down during the season. They didn't tell him until after the season was over. Should he be punished to that degree for taking care of his family?

That change obviously will have to wait until after JP is gone.

The criteria for jersey retirements at ISU needs to change because DI athletics has changed significantly.

Monte/ejim/Niang are all still playing and ideal 4 year graduate zero problems student athletes.

If they aren’t quickly retired when done playing something is very wrong with our “system”. They’re all as worthy as anybody else who has the honor. If Fizer/Tinsley can’t be in rafters those three and maybe Tamin in future are automatics.

The no diploma, no Hall of Fame cannot hold water - there are numerous HoF which did not receive their diploma.

Seems like it would make more sense to retire jersey's based on achievements while playing for ISU, versus post ISU professional accomplishments.

This approach may however be antiquated in today's world where guys may only play for 1 or 2 years at a certain school.

I'd also say you get your jersey retired if you establish a NIL endowment (love college sports these days).
Exactly. Tough as the game has changed. Would a transfer who was here a year and then got diploma while at ISU qualify? Etc.

In my opinion number retirements should be for what they did at Iowa State. He was in Ames for 2 years and was hurt for most of the second season. He’s got his gold medal banner up there. If he continues to have an incredible NBA career I could see them doing something else special for him
