First of all, I love IKEA for buying Eastern European goods. Those guys have been crapped on for a 80+ years, now, and deserve the capital infusion that IKEA gives them.

Second, I like them for their cheap stuff, that comes packaged in boxes for me to put together with my two teenaged daughters.

My 14 and 17 year old spent Sunday putting together a bed we bought on Saturday at the Regensburg IKEA. Turns out my 14 year old is a mechanical whiz, while my 17 year old is a little more artistic, but together, we managed to get the bed together.

All-in-all, it was a great day, and I got to spend some time having fun with my daughters. (Not going to be much more of that, at this age.)

I think one of my favorite things, is the smell of the freshly cut wood when you open the boxes.

Do you work for IKEA? That's quite a pimp job you just did :happy8se:

Thank you! (I'm looking for my "pimp" emoticon...) But no. Don't work for them.

Though we always wonder how it is possible that there is always "just enough" screws and other fittings in the box. Seriously. I always figure there isn't enough, and we'll run out, but there's ALWAYS just enough.

Plus the fittings are cool. Even a caveman could put the stuff together.

I'd say Iowa is about 20 years away from having an Ikea. I've been to the one in Minneapolis twice and each time went home with the car packed.

JUST bought a whole set of dishes at IKEA (Minn-apples) sunday and we LOVE them and they are much cheaper and better qaulity than the stuff we used to have from Target.

I went to the one in metro Chicago almost 2 years ago. I got a complete real pine wood (not that particle board crap) bedroom set for under $1000 (head/foot boards, 2 nightstands, and 2 dressers). I don't really like their sofas or beds (way too contemporary for my taste), but they have a lot of interesting gadgets and pretty much all of their wood furniture is very nice.

They have cheap good food also! It is a trip that I can actually agree with my wife and say that we both love to shop there.

IKEA stuff last about as long as it takes you to put it together.

Now, at our Ikea, there is an automatic ice cream cone maker. You buy your cone at the Sweden shop, and take it to the machine, where it makes a perfect little cone, everytime. I am such a sucker for robotic crap, I buy the cones for my kids, just so I can watch the machine work.

They even have detailed explanations, with video, of why you have to wait to get your box o' furniture delivered to your car.

And, as it is only 20 minutes from your house, we loaded up on frozen Swedish meatballs, the noodle thingies, and krakkers.

Well, what do you expect when you use your bed as a trampoline at your age?

Good point.....

I lived in Chicago when the IKEA opened up there, maybe this is why I am a little sour on IKEA. The DAY it opened, 53 was backed up with all of the people trying to get in there. My GF at the time just HAD TO GO! So I braved traffic and crowds for a couple of hours just so I could spend a bunch of money. Then I get home and spend the rest of the day and into the night putting together all of the crap we bought, 90% of which we didn't need or have room for. I swear to you, the wine rack we bought, which took about 4 lbs of glue to assemble, fell apart a week later.

I disagree. Never had a problem. My brother and his wife have used IKEA furnature for a couple years and it has held up for them.

Don't have anything against the place but with the way everyone talks about it makes me sick. Kind of like every girl I know going ga-ga over the Olive Garden. :goofy:

I think it's pretty funny to see a post like this on this site. For a minute, I thought I was on theknot.com message boards...
