I know why CFH is not wearing ties this year on the sidelines!

maybe the RN that chimed in earlier can add to this, but my father had a heart valve replaced in 1986, and they chose a synthetic/plastic valve over a pig valve, because the plastic valve had a longer life span. I would assume, 30 years later, that would also be the case?

When they replace the valve in the heart with pig or cattle valves, is it normal that it has to be replaced very often?

Yes, the typical life of tissue valves is only 10 to 15 years. Mechanical valves are generally suggested to people under 65. The Mechanical valves can last forever but the downside is having to go on blood thinners for the rest of your life.

This may be of no use to anyone at all, but I actually am an RN on a cardiac floor at that one big hospital here in Iowa City. If anyone has any questions about medical heart stuff I can try and give you answers. Not that I know anything about Hoiberg's specific condition, other than he has a pacer, but maybe I can shed some light on anything you're wondering about.

And since we're talking about CFH and heart stuff--I have many patients who find out they need to get pacers, and when they do, they worry that they won't be able to maintain an active lifestyle. I often use Hoiberg as an example of how a person can live a normal life despite having a pacemaker or a heart condition.

Fred has a normal life? :)

While in KC this weekend, I read an article in the paper about JP procedure and how CFH can relate to what he is going through. Fred had some quotes in there about advice, etc to JP. The article then stated that CFH would have an open heart procedure himself at the end of the season, but there were no direct quotes by CFH regarding this.

I've heard Fred say it a couple times that he'll be having a valve replaced this summer at some point. I asked my wife (who's a nurse) what the recovery time on something like this and she said something like 4-10 weeks. Hoping he's on the short end since he's young and in good shape. Great thing is that our recruiting is well on track already for the next year or two.

That is about right for recovery time. I'm three weeks out from having my aortic valve repaired and I'm 31. Feeling pretty good, a little weak and still have restrictions of not lifting things but otherwise, everything is great. It is amazing what they are able to do and how quickly we recover from it.

That Hoiberg doesn't wear a tie because it just makes it a little harder on his heart. Nothing big.

So why would us losing to OU at the half make him almost wear a tie again?

Also I'm pretty sure that if you are tying your ties tight enough to restrict blood-flow you're doing it wrong.

What game did he lose the tie?

do any of you wear ties on a regular basis? my guess is no...if you have a tie on to such a point that it's causing your heart stress, you've got no idea how to tie a tie. Allow me to help...there are many ways to tie a tie...

Notice that none of them include "super tight so that you pass out or stress your heart".

although I did find this after a quick search...

Shirts and ties: Get headaches, blurred vision or tingling around the ears—particularly at the office? Tight shirt collars and neckties can reduce circulation to the brain and increase intraocular pressure, a risk factor for glaucoma, experts warn. Tight ties can also decrease range of motion in the neck and increase muscle tension in the back and shoulders, according to a study of South Korean office workers in the journal Work last year.
Many men need to loosen up: 67 percent buy shirts that are smaller than their necks, according to a 1993 study at Cornell University.
And since they tend not to be cleaned as often as other clothing items, neckties can be transmit infection. Some hospitals have sought to ban doctors from wearing them.

How tight are people wearing their neckties that it's cutting off arteries? Wouldn't people be, I don't know, dead?

Can you feel your tie putting some light pressure on your neck when you put it on? If not, it's not tight enough. And if yes, it's adding some constriction to your blood vessels, forcing your heart to work a little harder. Makes perfect sense for a guy with heart issues to not wear a tie in the situations where he would experience the most stress (like being down by 20 points at home to Oklahoma after losing two straight).
