I think Hickory Park just brings out the animals in us.

On to favorite deserts at HP. I'm a simple man...pause for snickering..I get a coffee malt every time I go there.

Now you all have me hungry. It has probably been 6 months since I was there.

i cannot believe what I'm hearing about the saucy southerner. I ate that every Tuesday during football season after Coach Walden's weekly press conference. It was sooo delicious.

I really liked the "1 bathroom for 300 customers thing" they used to have going on there, in the old building. :skeptical:

People who need to go to the bathroom or wash their hands are wimps, imo....

Just kidding. I used to like the uneven floors and crowded tables of the old place, too. And I learned to go and wash before I left my apartment, too.

I definitely think the new bathrooms are better, and after eating some Hickory Park, that can be a necessity. The old place had more character, but the new one is definitely cleaner.

It is like the theory I have about public restrooms. No one wants to use them because they are nasty, but they are nasty because only people who reallllly need to go use them.

Hickory Park is so good, that the after effects are ignored in the quest for smoked meat.

You folks are all wrong, Battles is where you go for a BBQ sandwich (HP for ribs, so I hear). Don't forget to wipe your hawkeye in the morning.)

This is exactly right. I go to battles for sandwiches and HP for some ribs or other nice meat. Battles gives you very little for ribs.

I ate a full order of HP pork ribs on friday afternoon and it was the best meal I had in about 3 months.

Also, Jeff's Pizza at 2 in the morning rocks.

It's been years, but Battles was the bomb, when old man Battles first opened it. I was still in deep mourning from the loss of the original "Do-Biz"/Ames Dairy location, when he opened up in the same location.

I was be-bopping down the street, heading for Da Vinci's after working out, and this portly black man stopped me on the street and said "Hey, you. Try some of this! And put one of those paper hot dog holders full of food into my hand. Being a broke college student, I ate it. For the next few months, whenever I had loose change, I would go to Battles like a junkie looking for a fix.

You know what I miss most about Hickory Park? The pickle. They have the best pickles. I'm going on 1 year and 8 months without Hickory Park, right now, and it'll be at least another year until the next. Sigh....

I'm talking about the "pre-multiple stall days" here. Back in the late '70s, they would pack the place full, and they had one men's room with one stall for the entire place. No kidding.

I will agree that I couldnt do it once a week. It will be a nice thing to do four or five times a year. There were so many things on the menu that I wanted to try....the prok ribs werent the best I have ever had, but they were very good, and I dont judge a place on one visit. The beef ribs looked unreal.

To me, a measure of a BBQ place isn't neccessarily the main dishes...its the sides. And the BBQ beans I had were fantastic.

That they did.

I just came from the Park. I didn't think the new fries were that bad. But, I'm not that picky.

And remember, death is not an option:

Using that one stall, or...cleaning that one stall.

I agree. Battles is great. The new locations are nice for space, but I liked the old place on Hayward, which apparently wasn't the original location. I loved some smoked meat and a lemonade.
