My father was a VP at Sikorsky. In the 70's I was at the Bridgeport Ct. hangers with him. He was able to bring me into the hanger with some of the Marine One helicopters but that was as close as I was allowed to them. They were all kept in a separate area with armed guards. I'm sure today the security is much more strict.
That was the same day that I went on the final test run of Jean-Claude Duvalier's (president of Haiti) new helicopter. A Sikorsky S76. Pretty sweet ride out over Long Island sound.
I see some down here from time to time... they still keep them in a seperate part of hangers with armed guards, and thats on a military base
No idea what typical security for them is composed of... but I was in a hanger one was in once, and we were going to go look at something at the other end of the hanger but couldn't at the time because we would have had to go past the bird to get to the room, and as our escort put it, "See that man down there? He has a gun, and if I try to take you past there he will shoot us"
Despite the joking tone of voice I'm pretty sure it wasn't much of a joke
As I understand it you have to have special clearance to touch one of those (Known as Yankee White or whatever)
The new ones they're building... don't need quite so high of a clearance yet. I thought it was odd but as my dad pointed out... the President isn't going to ride in a test vehicle, he will however ride in the current ones (even if they are 30 years old)
Since the president doesn't fly in these yet, they aren't
as strict as to who is around them.
Don't get me wrong though... you can't just waltz up to one of these things - they have good security as well
