I've already signed a lease at the west towne apartments in west Ames. Has anybody ever rented from Havercamp in the past? If so was it a good or bad experience?

Reason why I signed with Havercamp is the free direct tv and internet ( which every apartment in ames pretty much has)

I lived in one on Billy Sunday Rd in Ames. They were nice and well maintained, but that was about 8 years ago... Not sure if they still are.

Right behind Wilsons? If it was 8 years ago, those buildings weren't more than a few years old so they should've been in excellent conditions.

Yeah. It was brand new. We were the first ones in. Had a 2 bedroom.

I was gonna say my aunt lived in one of the first buildings to go up out there and I was 10-11 at the time which was 9-10 years ago so they had to be pretty damn close to new.

I've heard stories of people not getting much if any of their deposits back for stupid stuff. Make sure you document and photograph all damage and uncleanliness when you move in.

wont get much of the deposit back, nothing new. but the directv sucks in the west towne apartments. if you want to call it directv. its worse then regular cable. a lot of worthless channels and didnt have some of the basic channels. good luck.

So far our experience with them as been just - "meh." Nothing outstanding about them from what I can tell. My roommates bedroom is half below ground and has had problems with water coming in through the walls and mold growing in that area. It took a lot of phone calls and visits to get anyone over here to look at it. The first "fix" didn't work. Then more phone calls and visits to their office... finally someone else came and ripped up the wall to "fix' it. It worked for a while but now we have noticed that the problem is coming back again. We'll have to have them come and do something about it.... again.

Other than that... I don't really have anything else to rag on them about.

Can't I just buy a Direct T.V. box to get all the other channels?

Somewhat related question about rental properties. I had a landlord completely ignore any and all inquiries as we never got a deposit back. Someone here had said that the landlord needed to provide either a receipt of bills or summary of why we wouldn't get anything back within 30 days. Is there any truth to that, and is there any limitation of time to call them on it?

At this point, I don't care about getting anything back, but I'm moving again, and want to know if there is any truth to this and if there's a time limit under 1 year I need to look out for.

They get the most godawful basic version of directTv. Anytime we were watching and it stormed, we lost connection. The internet is also very slow. They claim you are getting high speed, but their definition of high speed is anything over a 56k modem. Apartments are nice and all though. We had issues with watching people go through the dumpsters all the time. Got kind of annoying.

They were pretty typical for property management companies in Ames, so, in other words, don't expect any deposit back.

I lived in Steinbeck Apartments my senior year - a building with 4 units. One of our drunk neighbors shattered the glass front door and Havercamp made all the tennants in the building split the cost - total BS.

We paid something like a $300 security deposit and got back $1.28, no joke. They charged us for stuff like $15 per light blub (which we replaced prior to moving out), repainting the entire apartment (didn't need it), $75 for "smoke smell" (we didn't smoke, but our neighbors did), etc etc etc.

Gotta love those Ames property management companies - they basically make thousands stealing from students.

I lived out on Steinbeck with four other guys. We had problems with neighbors breaking the lights on the entry way and putting holes in the stairwell. Someone also drew an ash p*nis on the wall. We didn't get billed for any of this. We also got back most of our deposits, but we didn't host parties and cleaned every other week.

I forgot about those lights on the outside, they were always getting busted. I believe all tenants were charged for those too.

! I just remember another BS charge - our neighbors were having a rather large party and the upstairs neighbors called the cops. The cops showed up, knocked on our door, realized it wasn't our apartment that was having the party and we directed them across the hall. Next month, we have a $50 charge for a 'noise complaint.'
