The front doorbell on the house is not working (two chimes). The back one works fine (one chime). I figured it was probably just a bad button/mechanism so today I replaced it.

But it still doesn't work. Crossing the wires I get a spark, and the light behind the button lights up, but no sound. One other clue - the old button looks like it got hot and melted the plastic.

I'm guessing maybe the transformer is shot, but thought maybe some one on here might have more knowledge than me. I did check the wires on the wall unit and they look fine. And the unit doesn't show any signs of damage - everything looks okay.

Any ideas?

No ideas on how to fix it, but I'm thinking about my doorbell.

You can test the transformer with a multimeter to see if that's the issue.

I had the same problem...ended up being the actual doorbell, it had froze up.

This happened to us a few weeks ago. I actually woke up in the middle of the night to the smell of something burning. Looked all over the house for a half hour. Finally found out it was the doorbell. Weird stuff. I replaced everything and nothing worked. Turned out being the transformer. Just make sure to turn your power off before you start poking around with that thing. I read they can be somewhat powerful.
